A huge amount depends on your personality/drive/etc.. One of my best friends from high school - who was incredibly bright, BTW - decided to totally slack off his senior year and barely graduated (again, if he applied himself even to half his ability, he could have gotten into university no problem). He was a compu-geek, but not in the programming kind of way. He got some crap job testing games at Electronic Arts, and within a few years became a producer and even designed/created/launched a top-selling game himself (well, with the help of his team at EA). He then went on to co-found a tech company, left to do some free-lance consulting work, and is now a producer at one of the top electronic ad agencies in Canada, handling Microsoft's accounts. All of this without ANY post-secondary education, but alot of drive and determination.

Yup, it aint the degree but the will and determination that gets you pass that pre-stated economic roof.
My old Director only had a BS degree while most others had Masters or PhD/MD degrees. Yet, that guy was in there all the time! I actually saw him once at 4am, the morning after the companies Christmas Party, and again at 3am on Christmas morning... That made my days. Hey, what was I doing there!?

It's not so bad. You have to do your time before you get up higher ranks; still it sucks being somebody elses serf. . My biggest priority was to do something I like so I'd enjoy going to work each day.
$40k is plenty for a young 20 something with no family and it stacks up well compared to most other just out of school sort of jobs. I suppose I could go to graduate school and get a big raise at the end of it but right now I just want to concentrate on building some experience and working towards becoming a Registared Geologist (similiar to become a Principle Engineer).

Geologists get SCREWED in Canada. They should move to California were the government requires all sorts of enviromental work be done by a geologist. We're swimming in state clean up funds.

Almost all of the average salaries in Canada are far lower than those in the US, after conversion.
That's why I think it's a much better idea to move south to find a job.

On the upside you guys do get a better social security pay out upon retirement and you have socialized health care, but, all of the jobs we're talking about would have the Health care and 401k plans in the US as well.

I have a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering and that has made me join the top 10% income league in Sweden. But the wage differentials here are quite low. I earn about 40 k€ per year, while the low-end fulltime jobs for uneducated people (janitor and such) pay about half of that.
If I lived in US and had the same job, I would get 70-100 k$ per year.

Hmm, I am below average, but since cost of living is less here I guess that's OK.
Those are strange numbers though. The Finance guys I know were making 6 figures in around 3 years after grad.

You're talking about MBAs who specialize in Finance I think.

Garth: While I think that Oerdin is correct, you also have to remember that I got in the business close to twenty years ago. It was a whole different world then. Also, there are a variety of "Finance Guys". My specialty is is consumer lending to high risk individuals. Unfortunately, the consumer finance business paid its employees poorly and reaped huge profits. The mortgage business is more regulated but still reaps huge profits...they just pay better!

One guy I know just has a BComm. He has been working on his CFA and has a couple levels already. He doesn't have an MBA.
The other is an MBA.
They started as Financial Analysts. I am not sure of titles now.
I suppose there is a big difference within the field like anything else.

Mine are 6th and 14th (Economics & Political Science). Though I'm sure with the Law Degree, the starting salary will be a bit higher .

How in the world is History above Psychology? I know Psych is an intro. college degree, but History? Come on!
(if you can't tell, psych is my undergrad major)
...but as soon as grad school comes around...Criminal Justice, baby!

Undergrad doesn't count for much. CFA and good school MBA seem to be a starting point in USA. Actually standard approach is to get foot in the door, immediately receive pressure to do CFA. Then when CFA is done you can go places, if you didn't suffer nervous breakdown along the way.
