The second part of the two-hundred-and-twentieth edition of "The Column" is now online. Written by Spiffor l`Omnivore, it is entitled `What Makes A Good Civ Game (Part 2)`. In this edition, Spiffor breaks down the second two of eight points needed towards building a good Civ-style game.

I thought it was adequate up to point 4. Point 4, however, is excellent; it's a very neat way of looking at the whole realism debate......and if allowed I may steal it when fruitlessly trying to explain to people in the Future and Past forum that Civ doesn't need to be realistic, and that adding realism does not necessarily make for a better game, no matter how well the feature is implemented. Adding cohesion, on the other hand, would always seem to me to be desirable.

DrSPike : Don't hesitate to shamelessly plunder this column When I wrote it, I wanted to pinpoint and define precisely what every serious player feels a way or another. If it can help you explain, please use my column

Nice article. It's good to see a "feel" article every now and then, instead of just game mechanics ones.

I complained that the Pyramids were a giant granary the first time I played civ2.
Storing grain in a tomb seems so unsanitary!

Sorry, I wasn't aware of this. But was it a rant everybody shared at the time ? I mean, were there nearly as many rants for pyramids as giant granaries as there were with spearmen beating tanks ?

The spearmen beating tanks (or battleships) was an infamous part of Civ1.

Did you miss the Civ3 forum back when Civ3 was shipped ?
ABout 1/3 of the whining focused on spearmen beating tanks, while another 1/3 was focused on culture flipping
