It ain't no rhetoric -- hard work really does pay off . . .
Well, earlier today I finally graduated with my Bachelor of Arts degree in History.
And it seems that my academic excellence and work has paid off with recognition -- I'm a Phi Alpha Theta member with honors and I was recognized as one of the two university's Outstanding History Students of the Year.
I will be moving to Charleston, Illinois in late July -- my internship will begin in early August. It will waive my tuition and pay me $700 a month for the work I will be doing. My graduate courses will begin on August 20.
Seems like my efforts have put me on the right path.

Congratulations (From one history major to another)
Question: A History degree eh? What do you plan to do with that?
Answer: Starve.
Actually I'm History Ed. Poly Sci double major...so you starve while I go into politics

Just because I do not plan to get wealthy with my career plans, does not mean I will starve -- much to your dissapointment.
My primary goal would be to become a professor and teach undergrad students US history of Civil War-Reconstruction era at a four-year college or university. But openings are very limited, and hence, highly competitive.
I am keeping other career options open too -- museum is a possibility, especially since my internship will involve archival work in IRAD (Illinois Regional Archival Department). Or I could eek out a living by teaching at a community college after earning my Master's until I find a better opportunity.

well congratulations
I find that in school hard work usually does pay off, when you get to the work place it may not always pay off. Work is less fair and you are more likely to succeed socially.

I guess that is true, its just something I'm not as good at. When it comes down to physical and mental work, I'm great- as usual

Having money is not the same as being successful.
Even your degree is a wimpy one, MrFun, keep up the good work.

Good grief! Most grad stipends are at least $1K a month. Don't worry though, good law schools love MA and PhD students.

Congrats, MrFun.

Thousands of people do, every year. It may be rare, but it's common enough that "always" doesn't apply. Not even lottery winners need be considered, when I think of the number of mind-numbingly lazy, incompetent middle-managers I've seen who enjoy very comfortable jobs when, in fact, they do jack sh*t in terms of "hard work."
The sad truth is that, sometimes in this world, some people who don't do a bit of hard work achieve a lot of success. Oh well.

How do you know they didn't work hard to get to their current position? Even ass-kissing is a type of work. Also, achieving middle-management can hardly be considered success.
I define success as achieving the goal you have set for your life. I firmly believe that every worthwhile goal takes hard work to achieve. I don't look at people who are either genius or lucky as examples, because they are the exceptions and I'm not one of them.

Congrats, MrFun - did you notice my nomination for you in HoF btw?
I beleive you're working in a library right?? how much work/study are you doing?
I'm also trying to balance off working part time (20 hrs a week tho!) and studying - it's proving difficult and so i hope my hard work pays off.
Cheers
Matt

Rothy -- I have not visited the HOF thread yet.
And no, I no longer work at the local museum anymore -- I quit that volunteer job after working there for six months, because my last semester turned out to be more demanding, so I needed more time for academic work.

Congrats Mr. Fun. I minored in history . I really wanted to make it a major, but a triple major might have meant I had to do some work in undergrad .
