I watched my Auntie die today
At about 3pm this afternoon I got a message that my Auntie Marie was gravely ill in Canberra hospital and only had a couple of days to live. I rushed home and went to the hospital. The nurse told me she had Burkitt's Lymphoma and it was clear she was near the end. She was unconscious and her breathing was laboured.
I stayed with her for a while and then I told her I would see if her elderly husband was okay. He was staying at some residential accommodation at the hospital and said he was too tired to come over when the nurse rang to say she was near the end. I found him but just then the phone rang to say she was dead (5.15pm).
Looking back, I think she was probably dead when I told her I was going. She seemed very peaceful and still.
I am glad I was there at the end.
This is a dreadful disease, one of the most rare and aggressive cancers. I last saw my Auntie on Saint Patrick's Day in March and she was quite well. I am shocked she went down so fast. She was talking to people at lunch time.
We will miss her a lot but we are glad at least it was quick and peaceful death. She was 67.
Love to all sufferers and loved ones, especially the children. This terrible disease mainly affects children and young people.

I'm sorry to hear that AH. I understand how you must be feeling, I just lost someone recently myself. My mother passed away after a long battle with Alzheimers. Try to focus on the good times you had with her, and spend as much time as you can with the rest of your family.

We mourn not for the departed, but for ourselves.
Take comfort, AH.

Hang in there, Horse. I'm supposing it is now the time for you to step up to the plate and spread some comfort and hope, things that I know come naturally to you, despite evidence to the contrary!
I believe we continue on, without punishment or reward...I hope she journeys well.

I was with my father when he died.
Hard thing to watch.

Thanks guys.
One good thing was I was able to tell people that she died peacefully and looked okay so they weren't afraid to go in and see her. 2 of her sisters and some of their adult children arrived just after she died. Her husband also went in.
I'm going back to the hospital now to help my uncle with the funeral arrangements. I'm the only close relative in town and he's quite old and not in good health himself.

I agree, I was with my father as well. Hardest thing I've ever had to deal with.
PS But I'm glad I was there, I know he really appreciated it.

Sorry to hear about your loss.
In other news, I found out that my 1st grade teacher on Saturday died from cancer.

My condolences, dude... I had similar experiences with my great grandfather and great grandmother... But I was very young so didn't have to do all of the stuff that you seem to need to do. Again, my condolences...
