Like Sten Sture I fear remakes, but for once I would like to be pleasantly surprised by one... Problem is, they will always be compared to their outstanding predecessors... I often find myself wanting to be absolutely mesmerized ā la Civ II by new games and it never happens... Guess, it's a once in a lifetime event (first love kind of thing) and that it's pointless to compare new games (even if they're remakes) to old ones?

I've tried this Pirates2 game the last days, it crashes all the time... I've never come longer than to the loading screen...! Guess I'll have to wait for the real thing!

I've just been on the CIV3 web site and it looks like there is a new add-on to CIV3 called Civ3: Conquests. The map shown looks like that described at the beginning of this tread.
BTW, anyone know how to get Pirates! Gold (for DOS) running on a WinME machine? (Or how to get a copy of Pirates Gold for Win? I am willing to pay for it... )

Hi Steve!
Ah, there are endless pitfalls
Meier has said in the past that he won't revisit something beause without new ideas it is boring. So if he is actively involved, not a figurehead, then I fully expect elements to change. If Briggs is the true lead, I would expect changes too but more willingness to include some complexity. If the game just got a graphical overhaul then I would anticipate resoundingly criticisism from the media for not updating the game enough.
The problems will be in getting the elements right. If swordplay stays easy, some people will get disappointed. If it becomes a skillful twitch subgame, people like me will be annoyed because our lack of dexterity will consign us to avoiding that element. Everyone who played Pirates! is going to have a different idea of how to improve it while keeping the nostalgia alive for the parts they loved.
I think I'm going to do my part by trying to avoid any news of the game until the release version reviews come out. I've learned from Civ 3 and others that too much anticipation is usually a bad thing.

That's not necessarily true...did you ever play the original Outpost?

[SIZE=1] As for these Colonization sequel proposals, I dont get it. That game was terrible...just a crippled version of Civilization with the added "fun" of ridiculous micromanaging of the economy. My understanding is that Sid Meier tried to distance himself from this abomination and had nothing to do with it other than his name being slapped on the box to sell product. If true, a wise move
|
Blasphemy! Some of us really like micromanaging the economy! How can you not like a game that has like 5 different terrain types for forest alone - if memory serves: conifer forest, mixed forest, wetlands forest, tropical rain forest, and broadleaf forest.
Seriously, the game was an economic civ game, as opposed to a military civ game. I think a lot of people found this to be a very novel approach that really hasn't been replicated elsewhere. Or maybe it has and I just don't know about it.

I loved Pirates Gold and I wish I had the room to build a low end comp to run it (and a lot of other old games). Pirates wont run on anything much above a p200.
Considering the recent offerings from Firaxis, I'm going to wait until the first 2 patches have been released for it and only if the general temperature of the forum is warm and certainly not if it's a furnace. Otherwise, the Bethsoft offering sounds more appealing.
Bethsoft seems to be the only game designer at present with any understanding of of the concept 'gameplay'. Even Morrowind (which I still don't think is anywhere near as good as Daggerfall*) is way ahead of most other crpgs on the market.
So as far as Pirates2 is concerned, I'll wait and see so I wont be disappointed and hopefully I might be supprised.

It doesn't work all the time. There's at least one game that still runs too fast after I slowed the computer down by 99%. This is a problem with older games that use timing loops instead of built-in timers to pace the game. A notable exception is Star Control 2, which doesn't zip around even on some fast (comparatively speaking) computers.

I've been trying Pirates!2 thew last days(on another PC), and I have one, big problem: I can't get the combat to work! Whenever the combat screen comes, my character just won't use his sword. How do I do that?

Press 1 and 7 alternatively on the numeric keypad. That should work somewhat. I think space or enter might be involved too.

In the original pirates it was the left-hand side of the numeric keys that did attacks. My battle in the Pirates2 game I also used those keys to hit the enemy a few times. Unfortunately I had ~70 men and he had ~450...

Every RPG (Morrowind, Everquest, Final Fantasy.... the list goes on and on)
Not only could I name twenty, I could name probably into the hundreds.
Not to bash you personally or anything. I'm just showing a trend that gives Pirates II! a little hope here.

I seem to remember playing a pirate game on my Commodore 64. I can't remember the title but I suppose it could have been Pirates. I think a new version of the game would be great if it was complex enough. Something like a naval version of Total War would be fabulous.
Hmm, thinking about that. The game I'm hoping someone will develop in the future would be lik Civ3 with batlles played out like Total War. Clicking on a city would bring you to a screen like SimCity. Mmmmm, strategy, tactical battles, detailed city building . . . . . . all in one. Battles for cities would take place on your actual city screen a la the Sierra city building series. This will probably never happen but I can dream . . . .

Imo, the Nintendo version (!) was best. Much less cutting across screens (when going from one to another) and much faster. Also, you really didn't need too many keyboard inputs....

C'mon Skanky - you can win at odds of 1 to 450 in the original (so long as you don't get hit).
It made capturing a galleon with a pinnace and 8 men so much fun. It's going to be difficult to recreate that kind of "taking on the odds" factor in 3D - but I'll give Firaxis the benefit of the doubt until I'm proved wrong.

Pirates, I really, really enjoyed.
From going to Port and meeting the Govenor's Daughter, to sailing around the Caribbean, and fighting battles with the ships, and drifting along the wrong way with the wind, to trying to get up the Florida Coast to catch the Spanish Galleons loaded up with gold during that certain part of the year, (and usually missing them), and finding buried treasure with a map bought in a bar, to the sword fights in town, to the land battles to trek through the jungles to get there, to take over a town from land.
That was the original Pirates on 5 - 1/4 floppy, on an Apple IIC with 128k of memory, and sixteen colors for the 592 x 184 (or something like that) screen resolution.
And you know what, do you know what?
It was and is still the best game that I ever played.
Yarrrrr~~~~~~
Mateys~~~~~~~
Get the sloop ready to rumble!
And get some Spanish Gold, ye Hardys!
Smell the salt water, and drift with the winds of the Caribbean!

The sea battles at the city with their fortesses, like Cartegena.
All in the day and life of the Bucaneer!
Pirates II, I missed.
Load up the muskets, thar's a town that needs to be taken down, here.

Ah, well, actually I used a joystick to do the swordfights and play the game, moving the ships and gunning.
Still, have that joystick, I think!

That's the problem, I wasn't playing the original. I didn't even get to pick what sword I was using.
