You actually have to name them, when you put them in a network.
My workstation is in a big server box, my wife called it monster, when I came with it, and so I called it "monster" (hello Spiffor!). My router/gateway/server is "tux", that's so conveniently short when addressing services. My wife's desptop has her first name (she wouldn't remember another), and my old 486 box was "avatar", because I used it among other things for Ultima nostalgia games  . But it's broken now, the power supply is toast.
I remember my old Atari computer in the 80's was "Sally", because the 6502 CPU had that name in the books.

Oh come Richelieu - HAL9000s capabilities are not exactly PC standard yet. I'm looking forward to when they are though.

redhat's the standard. i use rh9, suitably customized.
debian's nice.
if you want, though, you can compile it yourself: www.linuxfromscratch.org
jezebel's a lot less tempermental in linux than she is in windows. split personality comes with dual boot.
