I honestly never really drank until around 21 and then I transfered from JC into a 4 year school where EVERYONE it seemed drank. Going out to parties, drinking, and (hopefully) getting laid was what most people did on a friday night. That was true for both girls and guys.
Once you get into habit of sitting down with your friends and cracking that beer it becomes a hard habit to break. Thankfully, I stay away from the hard stuff (usually) and I never really got into drugs.

I work in the Mental Health field.
Therapy helps some, medicine helps some; the combination help some. Other things work for some. I have a friend that doesn't use medicine or therapy, and he is great shape.
On seeing a therapist, a good one won't let you get away with whining. Of course, it can take many therapists until you find a good one. Also, different kinds of therapy work for different people, so you have to find that a therapist and therapy type that work for you if you go the therapy route.

Ah, should have guessed that only pattycakes would have the incredible bad taste to troll a thread about depression.

Have you no shame? To mock the lowest points in people's lives... how terrible. You, sir, have no decency!

Must you continue this appalling assault on all those that seek honest dialogue seeking help? Must you continue to laugh and thereby inflict more wounds on the innocent? What kind of a tiny man would be so callous and heartless?
Hmm, I'm running out of material here...

Were these diagnoses all by the same doctor? It seems a bit much really, especially the "mild schizophrenia".

Luckily I'm not really a drinker, my most dangerous addictions are Pepsi and sleeping. As I'm currently without health insurance, does anyone have any idea how I would find a relatively inexpensive therapist thats also good? I feel a little weird looking them up in the phonebook.

it's there, always a shadow looming over me.
usually, when it comes, i don't notice it until it starts dominating all of my personal time. usually, i turn listless, start having lots of morbid thoughts, have physical manifestations of pains and aches (a vise grasping my chest is the most frequent one), self-recrimination, greater disassociation with 'normal', and greater introversion.
it's hard for other people to notice, it seems; particularly since i've never caused myself damage, and i find it easy to at least pretend to be amused and 'normal' when others are around.
and: i refuse to go into therapy over this. i'm not going to end up being one of those pill-poppers.

You have over the counter Lithium? That's dangerous! Lithium is very easy to overdose. The toxic dose is very close to the therapeutic dose. In the US we routinely measure the serum concentration to gauge the dose.

hi ,
in most parts of the world you can get it over the counter in low doses , you would have to take half the bottle to get an overdose , ......
serum is measures ( allas SHOULD be ) but most of the people i have seen in my live taking it claim that after a while they know what to take , .... ( thats a bit risky )
they go a couple times to the doc , okay , one pill and a third , every evening ( so and so ) they watch out for salts and thats it , .....
have a nice day

If the dose is that low they're unlikely to be getting a true therapeutic effect. Most likely the benefit is largely a placebo effect.

There have been three attempted suicides, two of them successful, at my college this past week. Needless to say, the college is taking depression VERY seriously, and most professors have made it so that finals are either optional or are not able to hurt your grade.
