I know that Buster and Herc will be doing it, as I've been pactmates with both in other PBEMs.
I have commented to others as the gamesave screen has been displayed.
(let's say that the penalty is -16% economy and -8% labs. with 2 ec's per turn 84% is still rounded to 2 and the labpoints gain of 10 or 20% more than offsets the penalty, hence the reduced time to next tech.
Obviously, when the empire is larger, and income is maybe 300 or 400 per turn, with labpoints at the several hundred or thousand level, the penalties are more severe. Of course, future SE choices can reduce - even eliminate - the inefficiency penalties. hence the 0:0:100 split you'll see toewards the endgame)

Herc does it? Now that's rather a surprise. I've been with him in a number of PBEM's, and thusfar he's made only a rather poor showing. He's never done something as....well....downright sneaky as this before that I've seen.

Because we were reaching our 24 hour limit and we had to play the turn already.

So far, so good. Some points:
- Googlie is right, we should not be using 50.0.50. We can write off the inefficiency penalty in the first few turns, and we need the research boost, especially if we go for anything but SotHB.
- the CP going towards north -- there is a pod in front of it... isn't it risky to pop that pod with the CP? we could face angry mindworms...
- tech: I'm all for SotHB, especially in light of Googlie's words.

*nod* If going for Industrial Econ is a risk, it's not worth taking even Industrial Base, in my opinion. Let's go to Secrets straight away via Biogenetics and Social Psych. If we don't have the opportunity to research either of these, go with Industrial Base as a stepping stone to IndEcon, or alternately Planetary Networks. However, we aren't as pressed for time on Planetary Networks as we are on Secrets -- it takes almost twice as long to build the VW as it does to build most of the other starting SPs.
Those are just my thoughts -- if I'm confirmed for the Science post, I'll be posting a poll with all available choices.

You certainly have my approval, Adam. We haven't really had any votes for gubmint positions, and I'd like to keep it that way.

I was doing testing with this last night and I couldn't find any actual difference in research output, but if it works, it works, so let's do it.

Not to worry. Both the CP's are accompanied by scouts ATM, so the scout can pop it first.

For anyone who doesn't have a copy of vel's SMAX Strategy Guide, here's the link to his website where an early version resides:
