Leeds is quite affluent, a fine city. Rotherham has the best standard of football in yorkshire however.

I recently bought a new two bedroom penthouse appartment.
Price was around 90 000 €
Older houses usually go by the same price around here.
New houses usually cost twice as much.

San Rafael, the county seat of Marin County, California. If you don't know where Marin county is, we have two famous things to remember us by: we're on the other side of that "golden gate bridge" from San Francisco (there's an other side?), and we are the... um, proud home of John Walker Lindh.
The average home price would be more like $800,000 if it weren't for sh*tholes like the Canal District and Fairfax. Our county is home to 12 of the country's 25 richest towns, so if you want to get a house in Belvedere or Ross you'll have to fork over 1.2 to 1.5 million.

Ha! San Diego has that beat! Rancho Santa Fe is the second richest suburb/town in the US with only some place on Long Island eeking ahead.
Of course those rich bastards run up the price of housing so the rest of us can't afford to buy a home.

On Birmingham's Southside, houses run around $300,000. You can get a house the same size in the suburbs for around 120,000. If you're willing to live in the "woods" of Alabama, you can get a house the same size for around 80,000.

I'm moving to f'ing Vilnius.
Belvedere, CA is more like $4mm for your run of the mill place. The cheapest listing I saw was $2.8mm.
Housing is stupid expensive in the Bay area as others have posted.
Maybe we should move back to the Alabama woods...
Here is a local offering for a 2 bedroom x 1 bath beauty in my zip for just $639,000.

Looks like its in Camden.
The whole area is just crazy. I can understand some rich bastard spending $1.5mm for a big house, but north of $600k for a tiny little place? It just doesn't make any sense. The monthly nut on it would be $3,000 and that is with $140k as a down payment.
I don't get it.
This is what people are talking about when they get worked up about a housing bubble in the USofA. For some areas of the country it is a serious potential problem. Most places aren't like this, but if that snowball starts rolling, it will be too late to try to get out of the way; and there is nothing that the Government should or even can do about it.
When interest rates go up (some day) housing prices will go down.

Nothing wrong with that. You might want to give Knoxville a try, if you're not totally stuck on the idea of living in a metropolitan area. This place is cheap, flush with energy and lush with greenery (K'ville is well biodiversified), and but 3 hours away from Atlanta and Nashville, and 5 hours away from Cincy (if you'd ever have a need to go there).
Also, no state personal income tax, (though the sales tax is 9% and does apply to food).

Wars - I hear ya. I love the whole west coast from you to me, but the real estate stuff is just unfathomable!
JohnT - we are looking at the I-65 corridor between B'ham and Indy, probly within the year. Nashville is two hours from the farm, and that would be a good bet.

Yeah it's sad, i agree...
Btw: I'm not 'rich' by America's standards. My family is middle class (about $50,000/yr), and that is because my dad works 12 hours a day 6 days a week to make that kind of money. My mom only recently started working again (She has always put her motherhood first, and her employment second) and makes only enough to add icing on the cake (about $100 a week).
We don't buy things on credit, and are paycheck to paycheck household. My parents make one major purchase a year - usually for the house - when the taxes are figured (they always overpay in order to get a sum of money back once a year)
Hardwork and intelligent budgeting is what puts my family where it is, and nothing else. Isn't that something you support - hard working people and responsible spending? Two parent families, with a nuturing mother?
I'm sorry that you didn't have it as good as I did, but 'being a liberal' is how I think the government can and should make your life better. You disagree with me on the method, but at least recognize that as a person I wish that no one had to live in the conditions you and many others do.

Do you understand nothing? Property values are not about what the house costs to make, it's all about location location location

Can someone explain what a 'Den' is? Is it like a room for the guys where you have a fridge for the beers, a tv or what?

A Den is a Study that has become a small all-purpose Family room. Think bedroom sized room with a bookcase, some chairs or a sofa, and a desk, as well as some entertainment media - TV, Stereo, card table with a half finished 1000 piece puzzle...
Den's require furnishings that are at least 20 years old, and you can never remodel a Den.

I used to live in a 3 bedroom- 3 bathroom apartment in a small city in the Rio de Janeiro state. The condominium has a swimming pool, a sauna and a soccer field in a somewhat nice suburb. It costs about 20.000 USD.
Now I´m living in a suburb of São Paulo, in a pretty crappy place (violence, pollution, and whole god damn city jams at rush hour - thank god I live near my university). A 2 bedroom apartment costs ´bout 20k, a larger one will be for 35000 USD.
If you are really screwed you can go live in one of the huge nightmarish slums for about 1000 USD.
There are some fancy fortresses for the rich where an apartment of one, two or three floors would cost about 1 m/10 m USD. Those buidings are popping all over the rich areas of the city.
