The light and shadow effects represent about half the render time, apparently.
There's quite some debate about whether they should be an option to turn those effects off. It would obviously improve performance for weaker systems, but the shadows are crucial for some of the set pieces. It'll be interesting to see what they do.
In other news, Half Life 2 is gonna kick ass.

Looking at the screenshot, my 'weaker' 450 won't be able to play this one regardless of what you turn off. One more reason to upgrade.

I remember a few pictures quite like that one with the same monster!

Your graphics card is more important for these games. I actually got the screenshot off a review of nVidia's new GeForce FX5900 Ultra

I have an Nvidia 128 MB card. I'm sure my dad will get it; I'll just have to borrow it from him and see how it looks before I buy it.

The leaked alpha build wouldn't even run on it. Neither will the final build. I expect it to *run* on 800 MHz, but don't even think about fluent game with AT LEAST 1.3 GHz and 32 MB video, better to have 1.5 GHz or more, and 64MB video.

FWIW, this is the hardware configuration they used to test the graphics cards.

Screenshots of it have been out a while, but they still don't do the game justice.
Download the latest trailers from the Xbox pressconference and the id E3 presentation, it looks even better in motion.

for once i am glad that a game has a while to go before release...
It will give people time to save up for new hardware that this game looks like is really needs.

Yes, I suppose it would.
I got my upgrade the other day. I am very content with my Radeon 9500, although it's a bit of a pity that patching it to a 9700 gave me some instability problems.

HL2 and Doom3 will both be good. HL2 might be better because of the modding potential. FPS's are getting much better with each passing year.

Same here... I ain't much of an FPS fan, but I think I'll get HL2 and Doom3 (if I can play both of them). I've been warming up to the genre more because of the story elements... such as in NOLF2. Things are looking up.

The thing I like most about this game from what I've seen from trailers and playing the Alpha is how enemies bust through walls or crawl up through the floor at you. In the second level on the Alpha, that big demon slug dog thing breaks right through the wall, bursting pipes and sending stuff flying, rather unexpectedly right in front of you.

I used to hate FPS but then I played some Half Life and RTCW singleplayer and that really changed my mind

Oh I am still nostalgic back to the days of Doom and Doom 2 and I have followed the FPS ever since then as well as the strategy genre...it is quite a contrast but I am looking forward to Doom 3...I currently have an Athlon 700 but I am looking at upgrading within the next few months anyway...

I'm easily frightened by these games so expects to find me hanging from the lamp in the ceiling when one of those beasts burst through the wall next to me. Seriously, being scared is not always that fun. Could never stand playing as marine in Alien vs Predator.
