Britain's Favourite 100 Books - a BBC Poll
http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100.shtml

Here is the BBC's result of a poll of 140,000 Brits on their favourite book. You were only allowed to nominate 1 book.

Annoyingly, they did not let us know the winners, just the top 100. Apparently, 8000 books got at least one vote (some got only one).

Note that the list goes on two pages.

How many have you read? Me - only 40 (oops recounted).

Top authors are Dickens and Pratchett with 5 each.

My 40:
1984
The Alchemist
Alice's Adventures In Wonderland
Animal Farm
Birdsong
Black Beauty
Brave New World
Bridget Jones's Diary
Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Catch 22 (MY VOTE)
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory,
The Colour Of Magic
The Count Of Monte Cristo
Crime And Punishment,
Emma,
Far From The Madding Crowd,
Guards! Guards!
Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone,
The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
The Hobbit, JRR Tolkien
Kane And Abel
The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe
Lord Of The Flies,
The Lord Of The Rings
Love In The Time Of Cholera
Midnight's Children
Mort
Night Watch
One Hundred Years Of Solitude
A Prayer For Owen Meany
Pride And Prejudice
A Suitable Boy
Swallows And Amazons
To Kill A Mockingbird
Treasure Island
Ulysses
War And Peace
Watership Down
The Wind In The Willows
Winnie-the-Pooh

Edited: to paste in books and recount!

Veronica Loughran: Something like... 36.
Dante Hicks: What? Something like 36?
Veronica Loughran: Lower your voice.
Dante Hicks: Wait a minute, what is that anyway, something like 36? Does that INCLUDE me?
Veronica Loughran: Ummm...37.
Dante Hicks: I'm 37?!

There are only 8 non-English language (first publication) books on the list: Doestoyevsky, Tolstoy (2), Garcia Marquez (2) Coelho one in German (Perfume by Susskind, maybe) and ..... cannot remember the other one.

Although I am sure many have been translated, certainly the adventures of H. Potter and F. Baggins

Stefu or somebody else, can you give me a brief rundown on Prachett? It seems like everybody here has read Prachett but me... and perhaps I should rectify that.

Basically, he writes humor fantasy (some say fantasy parody, but that's really not a good description - while there's certainly a strong amount of parody, parody makes us think of a work dependent upon another work and Discworld is a world that can stand on it's own merits). It's, um, good. Funny. Stuff like that. Just read it, dammit!

Basically, an easy way to get started is to read Wyrd Sisters and everything from then on in chronological order, possibly skipping Eric. Best Pratchett stuff, IMHO, comes between Lords and Ladies and Feet of Clay, but they will benefit from reading some of the earlier books.
At some point, you may want to read the first five books, too.

I might have voted in this one by pretending that I am from Wales. I know that I did that for some BBC poll to do with the Hithchhiker's Guide.
