Metallica can't touch Zeppelin, let alone handle their codpieces.

Have to agree personally (I know im supposed to be objective... or am I?). When you want it heavy, you bring out the led.
A band who can write such varied stuff as "When the levee breaks", "Stairway to Heaven", "Tangerine", "Kashmir" and "Good times bad times", is godly!!

No clear opinion - it depends on my mood. I definitely prefer the first albums of Metallica (with Mustaine) than their later stuff, but I wouldn't dismiss them or Led Zeppelin.
Hence I voted Black Sabbath, in a league of their own.

I'm always curious on Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Pink Floyd.
For some reason these 3 are linked in my mind.
BTW, I voted Led Zepplin.

Sorry, I just have to say that after someone mentions Radiohead. I don't like most of the other bands you listed either.

Fair play! Its a matter of taste, I cant really critique anyone. Rock n roll is a force that unites, all differences are purely superficial.

Would go Led (lesser of 3 evils ) but hate the lot of them, as you know. Well, maybe not hate, but I really don't like listening to.

Well, I supposed it is an aquired taste, although even I was surprised when they were voted 2nd best band even in Britain (Millenium poll, Beatles came #1).

Easily Beatles. Stones are good, but not that good. Although I'm no Beatles worshipper. They were good, very good, but I wouldn't think of them as "the best band ever" or something. Although giving that title to any band isn't something I'd do, I can never say who may favourite band is, as loads is good and different.

The difference between a band like the Beatles and Oasis et al, is the difference between Hillaries ascent of everest, and the establishment of a hilton at its peak.
The first ascent is far more glorious
*with apologies to whoever used that analogy first

To poll anyone against The Beatles is blasphemy.
The Stones could go in with the other 3 though.

The Stones any day. They're just so much more rock'n'roll than the squeaky-clean "peace and love" Beatles.
As for the match at hand:
Hmm, Led Zep, mature, technically proficient band that might just be the most boring thing ever concieved, with an awful singer and endless, piddly guitar solos done in a way which is both unengagingly low-key and epically pompous at the same time.
OR
Metallica, lethargic standard-bearers of the "let's not be having anyone of this energy business in Rock" movement (aka. Thrash Metal). Totally unengaging in every way, with plodding pace, stupid fantasy-metal vocals and zero sex appeal.
OR
Black Sabbath, who're crap but at least are properly, youthfully Rock'n'Roll, with an ear for melody and some singles that approach the lofty heights of real Pop. Don't like the Horror-Movie schtick, don't like the Marijuana, don't like the mellow stonermental leanings, but okay.

Theres nothing wrong with peace and love *ben goes into a corner and bawls*
Some of us like "endless, piddly guitar solos done in a way which is both unengagingly low-key and epically pompous", with the legend that is Mr Robert Plant.
"don't like the Marijuana"
"Especially about Led Zep"
I know for a fact that you havent listened to much, otherwise you would have heard of Tangerine!
My b!tch with metallica is the DRM promo stuff. Its all bull, as I will show sooooooooooooon.
*laughs hard as record companies cower like insects in the face of the might power that is elijahs mistrust of corporate ethics*

Not being a drug user myself, I certainly prefer bands on Coke or Amphetamines or even ****ing Codeine to Pot. Pot just makes them all so... mellow. *shudder*

Pot seems to bring out peoples mellow creative sides. I like mellow, I dont like anger and needless aggression, I prefer poetry and artism.
Yes, I am a big Lennon fan. If you dont like it, I'll subject someone to my rendition of watching the wheels! jk

Philistine!
Metallica are technically excellent, but their catalogue is not particularly diverse.
Zep managed to master various styles of music and combine and go beyond them to create their own (endlessly copied) sound. If you don't like endless guitar solos then I guess you don't like the guitar. Radiohead and all those "pop groups suffer from the problem that they can't really play.
IMHO Led Zeppelin are the best rock band ever. No other group can match them for the combination of muscianship, songwriting, mastery of the "feeder" music of rock and roll (blues, Folk, etc.) production and innovation. There are bands that are better in each category but none which compete in all of them.
(And no, I don't particularly like "Stairway to Heaven".
