The results suggested that within important sequence stretches of these functionally significant genes, humans and chimps share 99.4 percent identity. (Some previous DNA work remains controversial. It concentrated on genetic sequences that are not parts of genes and are less functionally important, said Goodman.)
Using the DNA data, the researchers argue that humans and chimp lineages evolutionarily diverged from one another between five and six million years ago.

That seems to be the meat of the arguement.

Gangerolf, I was pretty sure that Christian theology maintains that the Devil can't actually create stuff.

Whoa whoa whoa, soldier. Please get a grip on the most basic of science before you start making ridiculous demands. We can have kitties put on the same list, but to suggest both kitties and cats are on our side of the evolutionary tree is nutso.

Bah. And I thought this thread would be about the upcoming DVD release of The Monkeys.

I guess you could consider them (The Monkeys) human?
I just thought it was odd that we are 99.4% monkey, and that we split from them only a short time ago... I wonder what made that happen...

Japher, please define "monkey".
Chimps are 99.4% us and we are 99.4% chimp.
Chimps have less in common with orangs and gibbons than they do with us.

Point 1 - I can see the probability that humans and chimps should be classified as Homos, but not monkeys in general. I don't think Peter Tork belongs in the same phylum.
Point 2 - I seem to remember reading that we are also 50% banana and over 90%mouse.

We're inevitably very similar to all mammals.
Yay for the monkeys! This will make it much easier for them to get closer to the people and then...! wah, poo, fling.

Guys, the group of hairy, smelly primates who live together and pretend to play rock music are The Monkees. The ones that don't pretend to play rock music are monkeys. Thank you.

If I was a chimp I would be very annoyed at being called a monkey
