Lucky sods.
Just remember, you're testing not just for yourself, but to be a representative (in some way) population of Civ players. Make sure you respond with all the concerns you can think of, be they your own or what we might think as well.

Myself and Frederick, Admins over at Civ3players Ladder have been invited as beta tester, we certainly have a vested interest in improving the multiplayer experience. Not to memtion some security issues.

To all beta testers, remember that all you can do is document and suggest. Just because you see what you think is a bug or something that needs changed, doesn't means it'll happen. For example, PBEM changes were suggested in PTW by the testers (security related, logging related, etc.) which never saw the light of day.
I personally am responsible for many, many suggestions (all of them good ). Did they all get put in? No. I personally am responsible for many, many bug reports. Are they all fixed? No.
Remember, you are a tester. Your "job" is to document errors. It's Breakaway's and Firaxis' job to decide what gets fixed (there aren't resources to do everything, so they'll decide the priority) and added.
Having said that, tell them what you think. It can't hurt. The worst that'll happen is you'll annoy the crap out them (not that I know this from experience).

With so many beta testers we'll have to be sure to organize in order to possibly get some things done. I know from my experience with other beta projects that if you're loud enough and offer a practical solution to things, stuff can get done.
Now then, I'm making my list and checking it thrice, and hoping that everyone else is doing the same.

Don't forget to tell them these things as bugs:
-lan games lag. have an option to disable all the anti-cheat stuff so that updates are only sent between turns for smooth multiplayer gaming.
-multiplayer games only allow 8 civs. that's absurdly small, especially when the game itself can handle 31.

The eight player limit is very unlikely to be removed. In any mode except PBEM, it would be too slow to send out the messages to all players continuously. If they would implement a true turn-based mode like you suggested, then it could be done.
I don't think Breakaway has the time or resources to do this level of change to the game.
(Hoping I'm wrong though)

So have all the testers been picked?
And I'm not in? :grr:

Sorry Theseus.... many of us didn't make the cut. Here is to the next time. (and always remember, if something goes wrong now, they cannot blaim us!)

Theseus, there's still hope. Breakaway is fairly new to these forums and may not know who's who on them yet. I wouldn't be surprised if a few more testers are added later.

Not to dash any hopes, but the BreakAway crew is actually fairly familiar with these forums and the members (one of them actually found me in the chatroom and recognized me ).
Hopefully they're still looking for people though.

I stand corrected. Okay, in that case you can give up hope, now.
Seriously, if this is like other betas I've been involved in, there will be some flux as some testers become inactive and others are brought it.
They can't have too many testers though. Someone has to buy the game
