Rome, without a doubt.

If you're interested in history: Rome.
If you're interested in commercial entertainment: Paris
If you're interested in street life: Rome
If you're interested in museums: Paris
If you like to listen to classical music: Vienna, London, Berlin, Cologne ...
(Sorry, no idea about pop music)
If you like to go shopping: Probably Paris (is not my world)
If you like megalomania: Both!!!!
If you're interested in architecture:
Hm. depends.
Roman: Rome (nothing in Paris)
Early medieval(<800): Rome
Late medieval/Romanesque: Cologne. Yay!
Gothic: Paris (nothing in Rome)
Renaissance: Rome
Baroque: Both
Later: Paris
I'd go to Rome (probably not. Rather to Dresden, Amsterdam or Prague. But that was not your question)

Don't know about Paris, but I can heartily recommend Rome. Spent three weeks there and could have spent two months.
But I guess it depends a whole lot on what y'all are in to. Or more precisely, what your wife's in to.

I do agree, though, that Venice is nicer than either of Paris or Rome (although it can get a bit smelly in the summer)

Florence is a treat. Pick up some Italian-cut men's shirts and business shoes while you're there. Rome sells the same, except it's about 25% more expensive in Rome. I don't have much of a sense of the market for women's clothes or jewelry.
Visit il duomo. A couple of museums. Food, food, food.
2-4 days.

Been to neither. My gut choice is Rome, my intellectual choice is Paris (more to see).

Get a map, make a streight line from Rome to Paris, and pic a city that that line crosses near the middle!

Pretty much every city I visited in Italy was a wonderful experience. I can't wait till I finally visit france. Paris or Rome, they're both great in my opinion, although I KNOW I loved Rome.
Siena is great for its mideival atmosphere
Florence is great for its city design, style and DaVinci museum
Venice is great because, well, you know...
Put alot of planning into the trip.... you won't regret it!

Rogan, certainly, a lot has been destroyed during the war, but there are 12 Romanesque churches which are also worth a visit, as well as parts of the Town Hall. Not as splendid as they used to be, but still they are. And I'm quite sure that both Paris and Rome offer less architecture between 800 and 1200 AC.
OK, there is no good architecture after 1920 and Cologne has been destroyed 90% in the centre ...
PS: I was utterly disappointed by Florence. All colours converge to grey there.

Give me a break, Florence is great! That's just ludicrous.
You've obviously never been to Toronto.

Roma is THE city and la bella Italia is Paradise.
Roma is one of the few cities in the world I would like to live in for six months or longer. (generally I do not like travelling)
On the other hand, after having visited Roma, Paris will be a great disappointment.
So when intending to visit both cities, start with Paris!
And -as monolith said- : '...every city I visited in Italy was a wonderful experience'. This is true indeed!
(I love Firenze too, but avoid it in July! -too hot and too crowded)

I've not only not been to Toronto, but also not to Moscow, Tokyo, Melbourne, Naples, Tromso, Chester, Ouagadougou, Capetown, Buenos Aires, Magdeburg, New York, Helsinki, Supru, Tampere, Helsingfors, Tikkakoski, and please spare me to list all the other places I haven't been to. I just compare those places I've visited and I know that there's no need for me to visit Florence again.
