Hotseat games: Diplomacy
I'm playing my boy in a hotseat game and when we met the ai took over the diplomacy - my civ appeared to him as an ai civ. Same on my side.
Is this normal for hotseat games?

That's my memory of Hot Seat games. When you're not in the chair, the AI is.

Yes, I thought so at the time. It's logical, though. It's the SP version of the game. There's no provision for more than one non-AI civ.

Install a network in your house and play a MP game. Works better than hotseat games

hey good idea
My 11 year old just started at civ again after his older brothers had convinced him that it was boring.
I could link up 2 of our computers and play him.

IIRC the interaction in hotseat games is like that in PBEM games. It is a rather clumsy way to play MP IMO..........but some people make it work.

Making it "work" and doing it right are two different things What fun is Diplomacy if the AI is making the decisions...

It's a load of fun when you manage to trade techs...
Then the other guy gets to the chair and realizes that you just got Invention for Mapmaking.

I dunno, its clumsy but we had a lot of fun. I especially enjoyed catching him trying to look at my screen. Its nice being in the same room.
When he saw my knights appearing in force near his capital he suggested we start another game

Hmm, so much for going easy on him.
I take it you're more of an old school kind of guy that doesn't feel the need to let the boy win for his self esteem.

We're playing for fun but he's learning too. I don't offer advice but I answer his questions.
Lesson 1: Humans play better than the ai. So don't attack them until ready. This lesson will be demonstrated rather than explained

Gee. More shades of Hydey and Trev. Got room on your other knee for Hydey?

You have to strike a balance between completely crushing the kid and thus his interest in the game, and making it too easy where he's sure to smell a rat.
You are right - This is something I learned from playing with Hydey.

I played my dad in table tennis a couple of times a week for about 6 years before I won a game. It made it worth it.

We never did beat him. (of course when he got to old, he stopped playing) I agree, it makes it more worth it.
The current fashion of giving every kid participating trophies really sucks.

My daughter has a whole box full of them. She won't display them due to her disdain for them, but she won't let me throw them out. I just don't see the point.
And it degrades actually winning. You get a trophy for winning and it doesn't seem to mean as much when EVERYONE else gets one.
The pussifying of America.
