I think we need to know WHY your son wants to join. Try to get an honest answer out of him.
My dad is a great guy, very laid back, never spanked us, always said, "You can do whatever you want to do," and he did try to talk me out of joining the military, but that was one instance when I really wish he would have been more persistent. I didn't understand what I was doing.
You're lucky though, you've got 2-3 years. Maybe this is just a fickle idea and it will pass quickly. If not, my advice is to let him join when he is 17 (which he can only do with your permission), but on the condition that he has to be a reservist. Then he can learn what it is like, and always (I think) switch to full-time if he wants to. And if he joins delayed entry (which is siging up while still in HS and then leaving after graduation), remind him every once in awhile that even though he has already signed, he has apsolutely no obligation to go until he is already there. That is something they will not tell him. Maybe signing away years of his life will shock him and he will be happy for a way out.
Also, have him talk to whatever military people you know (except recruiters), so he has a full understanding.

forcing him not to go may just increase the reasoning TO go in the first place. If you're accepting of his wishes, the novelty of it all may wear off.
Besides, whoever made the comment about kids changing in 2 years is right. Hell, when I was 15 I was a centre-right republican!

You know what'd be ironic? If Tass's son was a true-blue American patriot. I'd my ass off if that was true!!

IIRC, you have to graduate high school to join the military nowadays.
And what branch does he want to join?

tass, i always thought you were 16-17 based on your political views and fondness of living in the old country. also the fact you lived in utah seemed to indicated you were not their by choice and thus a minor.

It's not that he lives there that indicates that he's a minor. It's that he whines about it so.

why should he , if he can run around in 4-5 years time with a degree from a top us school , ....
|
Because he won't be running around with a degree from a top US school without a high school diploma.
The military does not negate the need for a diploma, and I'm sure a GED doesn't look as good when you apply. In addition, I am aware of some MOSs that require a high school diploma. So don't just blow it off. Hell, I'm not even sure they let you join without a diploma or GED. I've got ASVAB tomorrow, but my recruiter told me I have to finish school before I join. One more year...

So much different from the UK service experience. Count your blessings.

My son (15) just informed me that he has the desire to join the US military in 2 years!!! As most here can imagine, this is not QUITE what I had expected.
What should i do? I can't let him go! What if he were to get hurt or killed?! Plus, I hear the intellectual capacity of most officers is.....LOW
What should I do?!?!
|
Let him, its his choice, he'll come back home either loving it or hating it. and theres nothing you can do about it.

This is simple to overcome...
Someone with cryllic installed should take a screenshot and then post the picture.

They only take people who have graduated from high school and can score well on the ASVAB so you should be safe at least until your son is 18 and graduates. If he does decide to go into the service then realize that by and large it is a pretty safe enviroment, that it will help him to mature, he will get a great deal of money for college, and he just might get to see the real world while he's at it.
I know you are worried but you might be making this out to be worse then it really is.

Tass, ive read this whole thread, and I dony believe you ever addressed the point Shi made awhile back.... how old are you? If you had a 15 year old son, and your birthday is in 1969, that would make you 18 when your son was born? 18!? Thats awfully young...
I demand pics of Tass

Btw, i will be going into the military... and ill be getting a pretty sweet deal. The air force academy put me down, but said i was qualified, and as a consolation they gave me a $15K a year, 4 year scholarship to any college with a AFROTC program. There are some other goodies with this, but in the end i will have a comitment to the air force (its usually 5 years, but it does vary). But i will have a garunteed job after college with comparable pay and excellent benefits, and will have excellent job experience for after i leave the air force, if i so choose.
The military has many good options. I wouldnt be entirely closed mided about your "son's" future wishes. You should at least try to explore it a bit with him, and help him find his options. Going in at 17 he may find is not the best thing, but waiting till after college or something could be. Give it time.

Thank ya. I really think things actually worked out for the better, which is awesome considering I dont believe in any higher power, god, karma, etc - tho i was pretty tempted to thank them all. I also unexpectedly won another scholarship, so I am in good shape after being freaked out for awhile there. 'Poly posters gave some good advice during that tough time tho . thanks.
