The bastards! they killed dogmeat...
I got my fallout 1&2 games in the mail yesterday, so far its been cool. it is a tad bit old, but graphics issues can never overcome a good storyline.
how much different is Fallout2 from the first one? I dont want to install it until I finish the first one, so I dont spoil the ending.

They're both great. Best RPG ever made, IMO.
Fallout 2 is a bit different in the setups, but the story is larger, the world is larger, and Generally, hours upon hours of fun and fascination.

Yep, Fallout 2 is done in the same style as #1. But it is bigger and better, like Azazel said. So, you probably won't be disappointed.
PS: Oh and sorry about dogmeat...

Not only that, but it's buggier as well . Pick up the patch before playing... you'll thank yourself for it.

I also had a strange fondness for Dogmeat, and during most battles I fought hard for the stupid thing to avoid being killed. [Sometimes by my own party mis-firing.] In the end I got so sick of Dogmeat, I killed him myself.

If memory serves, they give a nice tribute to Dogmeat in 2. To second Imran Siddiqui, get the patch. I tried playing without it, got about to the end, and had to put the patch on. Applying the patch means starting over. Aaaahhhh!

To third Imran: GET THE PATCH!
Dogmeat returns, you can find him in a ... special place. The map has these special places scattered around, some of them are purely inside jokes, and stuff like that.
Oh, and it looks that space05us' character is a moron!
Get intelligence. The game is much more interesting that way.

Fallout!
When (if) you're finished, try to play the game again with intelligence at 9.

smooth talker raises it enough in conversations to make it so I have alternative things to say. If by making the game more interesting by being able to ask about certain things etc. than Im fine how I am. Right now though Im wishing I had chosen repair as a tag skill instead of big guns.

dogmeat is in 2, but he's not as good. dogmeat rules in #1. It's a shame you can't keep him until the end. It's far too difficult keeping him alive.
It helps to have a good intelligence. In my current game of fallout 2 I have an intelligence of 10. It's gives you more skill points, so you can boost those combat skills as well as non-combat ones. Also you want a high agility, and having a decent perception is also useful.

In Fallout 2, try different ways of doing everything. They really have put a huge amount of little extras into the game. Lots of random specials in the wilderness in both games too.
I usually go for gifted to get those stat points. Strength can be kept average because it can be improved later. Intelligence is a must for getting a lot of conversation options and skills. The beauty of Fallout 2 is that you can replay it with lots of different characters in different ways without feeling like you are just repeating the same steps all the time. I've never felt that so strongly in other games.
