Zylka's avatar
Am I the only person who holds that the use of the Nazi swastika as an avatar should not be allowed?

Uber used one before and was "moderated".

I don't think it should be banned.

Or are there people on 'poly who have never even seen a war film or whatever. Its just a cross with legs. But if Zylka wanted to put anything on his avatar I wouldn't care. You know what he's trying to do, and UR has taken the bait starting this thread.

While I tend to agree, that avatar sets a less friendly tone to Apolyton than does, say, FP's avatar. Mind you, I have not even seen Z's current avatar.

I thought it was a joke for the banning the nazi party thread.
Made me laugh

Zylka's profile (with avatar)
On my last vacation to SE Asia, they had swastika signs on pretty much every street corner in the Indian/Buddhist parts of the cities I visited. It's quite a popular symbol of luck/prosperity among Buddhists, but somehow I suspect Zylka's not using it for its religious significance...

Maybe they were Finnish Air-Force -symbols (Like swastikas, but lines were pointing the other way)?

Yes... people have been moderated for using swastika's before.
Zylka's avatar has been removed, and he's been told not to use them again.

Tuo,
IIRC I've seen both variants. Apparently Indians aren't very particular when it comes to such symbols

The nazi symbol is not allowed here because it's use is forbidden in the law of Germany, or so I'd guess.

No... it's not allowed because many feel it's offensive.
Now granted, there are some other avatars that some feel are offensive as well, but not to the same extent as swastikas. If a lot of VALID complaints are made about a persons avatar, we look into it, and make "the call"
Also, avatars that cross the line in terms of "good taste" and "sexual content" have also fallen into the category of having the user "asked" to change it.
Yeah... there are really no set rules, and some may think it's arbitrary at times... But that seems to be the nature of the beast.
Common Sense seems to be the general rule of thumb.

Those are not swastika signs. Those signs are mirror images of the Nazi swastika. That is a buddhist symbol that predated the Nazi symbol for a couple of thousand years.

I am not sure about the UK, but in many countries, open displays of Nazism are illegal, and so are open assemblies of neo-Nazis. For the very least, that is a symbol of hate, racism, war, and repression.

I'm sure intent plays a large part in the admin's decision here. In this case the probable intent was to wind people up.
