I can't beleive I didn't know....
Anyone else discover something after playing for a long time that they didn't know about Civ?

I think one of the great things about Civ, and one that I think many would agree on, is that there are new things still be discovered (or in some cases researched).

But what makes me laugh, (usually at my self ) is finding something after playing for a few years that is an obvious part of the game. I'll give a couple of examples, and I am hoping you will share some similar stories.

In a sp game I played recently, I was playing out the game, even though the result had long been determined (not sure why, guess I was bored). Anyhow, I had changed any city that had produced everything else that I needed to capitalization, to get the gold. What I had never realized before, and only just discovered, is that you can change to capitalization and back to something else again after a while. Previously, I thought you would only change to capitalization once everything was built, and I thought the change was permanent.

Another example (and this one is from a while back, and amazes me that i didn't know it before ), is on the City screen, I was changing the display from unit display to happiness display, and hit the up/down arrows by accident, and lo and behold, another city screen! LOL, I was amazed at this "New" discovery, and embarrassed that I had previously opened a city window, made the changes, closed it, and opened a new window. It really speeds up micromanaging to be able to quickly scroll through your cities, and I can't beleive how long I played without knowing this.

Last example, from the first game I played. I remember not really understanding any of the game mechanics, and as a first game, (on chieftain I beleive) I did a lot of things wrong, but one of the problems in that game was my capital was having hunger problems, so I irrigated...and irrigated...and irrigated....and...you get the message. By the time I was done that game, I had irrigated all of the roads leading to the city, and some of the squares outside of the city radius

Any one else or I am the only one out there?

p.s. Ming, I know this probably should have gone in General, but I didn't think of that until I had already typed the message, so hopefully it can stay in MP, but if you think this needs to go to General, feel free to move it...Like you need my permission! LOL

It could go either place... especially if you are talking about learning something new that applies to MP games

The finest example was oedo years... how long did we play before he figured it out

I remember using the arrows on the city screen to scroll through but at one point it caused a crash. I don't know if it was because I had 255 or so cities or what. Since then I've never used it again.

Well... after all these years, I would hope so. But when you listen to SK or Eyes... there are still new strategies to learn. I'm sure we will still find "something" that we didn't know before...

the game is always changing........the key to any civ game is being able to stick with your strategy for as long as possible...

if that means early warfare to create space ..... or
to set up a trade empire b/c you found island 3-5
build HG and just expand your arse off....

etc etc.....play the hand your dealt in the best possible way, take some chances....... and hope your neighbors aren't right beside you....

some hut luck is nice, but better than hut luck, is NOT getting screwed by huts...

i don't care if i get a nomad, but i don't want 4-5 crap techs if i don't have decent sciences

Getting the nomad/city after 2000 isn't a big thing, but getting one before 3300 is one heck of an advantage.

Depends on how far it is from your cap in 2x moves you can end up moving the settler back for 10 turns becouse if you build with it right away you would have 80% corruption and waste anyway.

Btw, did someone calculate the corruption/waste in relation to the distance to your cap?

i think that was dicussed awhile back in the strat section....i have seen threads on it..

the flip side is even with the corruption, you start off a second empire and can claim more land

That helps if you play the tiny rockmaps you play, I usualy dont play smaller then 50x50 so I'll only build it on a chokepoint or similar.

For 4 man we go 39x49.
Even if it's full of corruption, once you're in monarchy, it can provide a good expansion base that would be time consuming to get settlers there from home.

And despite any corruption, it's still a beaker, and we know now important everyone is on the way to monarchy.

Yes, I've delayed opening a hut for a turn or two, if I'm almost ready to settle a current nomad. You get such a feeling of satisfaction when you delay that turn, and then get another one.

Who cares about corruption... a free city is a free city. And the farther away from my capital, the better. As stated, it gives you a chance to build a second empire quickly, instead of waiting forever to get a settler there from you starting location. Unlike Civ III where a far away city can't produce squat, even a corrupt city in Civ II can spit out settlers.

And makes your opponents think that they're wasting their time sending settlers that way. So you can sometimes settle the land inbetween at your leasure.

Yeah, nothing like showing your opponent a chariot prior to 3500 in an area, he's likely to avoid it for awhile fearful of losing any units sent back there.

As stated... half the fun is convincing somebody they shouldn't come your way. You can fill in at your leasure while taking other land that is still in question.
