Well there is a very Nordic answer for you.
Get him to say it on a rocky island in the Skagerrak on a hauntingly beautiful day and you've got a Bergman film.

Yes, indeed. I'm closing my eyes and I'm hearing Max von Sydow murmuring the words to Bibi Andersson. I'm actually not sure how many "s"s Bibi has in her name. I went for two because it looks kind of Swedish to me.

No debate at all. If Adam Smith gets a gig, the third spot has to go to Sun Tzu. Leaves Adam for dead in the usefulness department.

He says it and then dives nude into the water and they have a magical day, possibily involving sex, possibily not, that is left vague.
But whatever happens, later someone has a dark night of the soul and commits suicide. Then we have flashbacks or dream sequences or someone is shown doing mundane work, possibly housework, say an old woman singing some traditional song whilst washing clothes the old fashion way. The camera lingers on the dirty water going down the drain.

Somewhere in it we need a scene where he plays Civ - rather than chess - with Death.

I have the scene now - they are staying in a rustic fisherman's hut. The weather, a squall, forces them indoors. The fisherman's hut just happens to have the latest PC amongst the bric a brac and old fishing nets. It also happens to have high speed internet. He has discovered a group of friends from Australia and logs on. He start playing civ. There is a furious argument on icq. He swears and bangs the keyboard. In the background the beautiful young girl can be seen slowly undressing by kerosene lamplight. She turns her back and hops into the bed nude and alone. Fade to her staring off into the night, clutching the bed clothes around her as "bloody Hydey!" is heard. The last shot of the scene is rain pattering hard on the window pane.
