You're probably confusing Ingrid with Ingmar. Very Swedish to have only three letters out of thirteen to differentiate between them.

I am indebted to Carolus who has helped me to understand Bergman better. I had forgotten that Nordics take everything literally.

I'm going to stop trying to find deep meanings in Bergman films now. There aren't any.

Turn it up, Hydey, you've been known to quote reams from The Virgin Spring at the cricket club bar after a couple of slabs.

Nope, he's still alive and kicking (not sure about the kicking part, though )!

He's 85... Having all that angst already in his thirties, I can't imagine what his life is like now, staring the grim reaper in the eye...

While he employs a Spassky opening.

Ok, ok.

I don't like his style of play. He was (is?) considered a bore on the board, which (I suspect) is why finbar chose "Spassky opening". It adds to the Bergman atmosphere...

Spassky was not a bore! He was a great attacking player. If you wanted a 'bore' Petrosian (who Spassky beat to become world champion) would have been a better choice.

Hm, maybe my memory is failing me, but I seem to remember that he was considered a bore. Maybe that feat was attributed to his personality and not his style of play? It certainly would appear so in comparison with Bobby Fischer...

I think it's certainly true that compared to Fischer (on and off the board) most people are pretty sedate.

A Swede and a Brit going each other over the relative merits of chess players. And economists to boot. I think I've now seen it all in this forum.

Oh, and for what it's worth, Ingmar Rex, I did deliberately choose Boris.

I'd prefer it if you said "whom Spassky beat", thanks. For goodness sake, I've already explained the difference to rah.
