Help, too much unhappyness
Ok, I never thought I would come to this and would need help but... I do.

So here goes.

I started a new game today trying to be expansionist and a bit ICS.
Diety
Large Map
Normal temp
normal wetness
Random age
Random land shape (apparantely continents)
big land mass
7 civs
roving bands.

Now, 820 AD, I am trapped on a land mass alone with no contacts. I am doing ok in science. I have 17 cities. Two possible science cities.

However, my main problem is that for 20 turns now I am fighting with unhappy ness every where I go. I have had the same number of cities for a long time now, as I have no place to expand. I was under monarchy, 2.5 units per city (in avarege) when it started. Everybody were going nuts.

I built temples everywhere. No use. I switched to republic as it has a bigger unhappyness limit. No use. Had to disband every third unit to free up some shields. Then only when I used rush buyed caravans to build the oracle did it quited down.

I am afraid it will soon happend again. What is up with that? I played diety alot and never had that much of a problem with happyness.

What did I do wrong?

I would love to see some suggestions here. Happiness on Diety Level is one of the toughest things to control.

To play ICS you should build the Hanging Gardens. (As early as you can )This wonder gives some/enough relief from unhappiness. There are many variants of ICS, but have a look at the Great Library (sticky thread at the top of the strategy forum) and read DaveV's guide to the Sleaze.

I have played many games on your large map settings (sorry the links to your saves are not working) using ICS, and I would suggest that you take the the shortest route to Democracy possible and then build the Statue of Liberty. If unhappiness worries you go for a Fundamentalist government. Don't worry about the science you can steal the advances as necessary.

In short Monarchy + Pottery + Democracy and you will win!

I know but I missed the hanging gardens as I discovered pottery too late.

What I do have though is colossus, great library, oracle.

I'd appriciate general advise on how to contain unhappyness though.

Also, I didn't mean to be explicit ICS, only to use it as a guidance. I still build buildings, only less.

I use to have this written down, but working from memory, I think the early happiness requirements (to keep the people content) under Diety are:

Size 1 city = none
Size 2 city = 1 miltary unit
Size 3 city = 2 miltary units
Size 4 city = 1 temple 1 military unit
Size 5 city = 1 temple 2 military units

You will need a marketplace for a size 6 or 7 city.

Size 8 cities will require a coloseum or cathedral, or a boost to your luxuary rate.

If you go to Republic you will probably need luxuaries set to 10%. Democracy usually requires 20%.

Mich's and Bach's wonders are very valuable at the Diety setting.

You have crossed over the city count barrier, which I think is 15 so you get greater discontent. You will probably have unhappiness showing up one step earlier than the above requirements. Thus a size 1 city will now require a military unit...etc.

I think the next happiness barrier is at 30 cities.

I find it very difficult to manage deity without 2 happiness wonders in my civ at all times (generally HG and Mike's Chapel early on, Mike's and Bach's after railroad). So, I'd say you need wonders. But, more specifically, you really, really need Mike's Chapel. There are folks here who will tell you that the Oracle is a reasonable substitute for the HG -- and, by itself, it is -- but the big problem with the Oracle is that you have to cancel it to get Bach's; that means, once you build it, you must get Mike's (your other option, waiting for Cure for Cancer, takes too long). Your big advantage is your 17 cities on one land mass; you should be able to crank out wonder-building caravans by the score. Of course, if you don't mind going fundy, then SG's democracy/statue strategy is probably the best solution; but I hate fundy and never use it.

THanks
I continued it a bit and I think I managed it pretty well though I lost some less guarded cities to the germans.

Any advice now?
