Just when you thought you've seen it all...
Real conversation I just had on MSN:
Quote:
|
Dave: Security is a joke for most previous Windows
Dave: It's harmful to computers on the network
Chris: "most previous Windows"
Dave: Even XP isn't that great
Dave: Windows Server 2003...too early to tell
Chris: It's been admitted that Win 95/98 weren't the best, security wise. And MS is taking steps to perfect security
Chris: It's easy for the peanut gallery to criticize... yet I don't see anything better.
Chris: Linux has TONS of worms, etc for it
Dave: OpenBSD
Dave: OpenBSD has had...1 security vul'n in the past 12 years?
Chris: I'm not having this debate. The "MS isn't secure, Windows sucks" argument is so overplayed, i'm tired of it.
Dave: Oh God, I can't believe smoeone said that to me
Dave: I've got a rep for being a "MS fanboy"
Chris: Sure aren't acting it.
Chris: You seem to be playing in the "NOTHING MS CAN DO WILL EVER BE GOOD ENOUGH" vein.
Dave: I'm generally unbiased and use what I like
Chris: If I want to read drivel like that, I'll read comments on /. on a MS topic, thanks.

There you have it -- don't judge a book by its cover.

Actually, OpenBSD is based in Calgary.
Siro: Theoretically, the security features in Longhorn (and even Windows Server 2003) are kickass, but it all remains to be seen.

Oh, I'm Dave in that convo.
He's the one telling me to knock off being anti-MS.
That's what makes it such a great convo.
On Apolyton I'm an MS fanboy, to MS employees I'm a anti-MS zealot. I just can't win.
Sparky: I'm not playing the "I'm With Stupid" game because I think it's stupid.

Given that you must be "Dave" I find this astonishing.
There should be a special gold-lined page on Apolyton for posts like this.

If chris is one of your hired guns tell him to holster himself, so to speak, because he fools no one but everyone except me.
Asher, you've told me that Windows is super secure many many many times. You said it was "secur-er" (or better, or one of those saucy trolly words) so to speak than every MacOS and you at least implied it when you said MS violated no monopoly laws because of their superior product. I guess you take it all back now..?
Simply ridiculous AND you have fooled and confused everyone but myself. And that makes me proud.

I haven't said any of the things you've mentioned.
I've said Windows isn't any less secure than Linux, which is absolutely true. In fact I believe it has a much ( much) better track record than *nix did at at this point in its life.
I've never said, nor implied, that Windows is more secure than any MacOS in existance (OS9's security was worse than Win9x by a good deal, it just so happens no one hacked it since...well, why hack a Mac? So you can steal someone's furry porn?). But OS X may be very secure, I don't know enough about it (and I don't particularly care, either).
I've also never said MS never violated any Monopoly laws, I've said many times that they've done things which are VeryBad, like their OEM licensing crap they did. And I agreed they should've been taken to task for it. The rest of the case was absolute bullshit, though. It had nothing to do with a "superior product", it had to do with grudge matches and jealousy against MS by competitors who wanted to (ab)use the government to crush MS so they can take its place.
Chris isn't one of my "hired guns", he just works at MS (WMP).
The person confused here is you, because you've taken the liberty of pulling **** out of your ass and making assumptions when you shouldn't.
What happens is people mistake me from an MS apologist here, since the majority of sentiment is anti-MS. So I'll counter the bullshit of the anti-MS people. Similarly, particularly with MS employees, they think i'm anti-MS since I counter their bullshit.
In reality, I'm somewhere right smack dab in the middle. But people only see what they want to see, so I'm always one of the extremes to people. UR & Co call me an MS apologist, to other people I'm a BSD evangelist or generally "anti-MS".

Who are you? And asher - ok. But you need to realize that if windows is not 100% secure then it does not legally belong in control of 95% of the market. It belongs in a smaller market. A tiny, "mini-er mart" if you will. I could go for its complete elimination if I did not depend on 2 of their computers, actually. Yes that would be nice, more secure for us all.

That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while.
Market share should not be determined by a commitee which makes judgement about which OS most secure, then forces people to use it. Market share should be determined by what people want to buy.
I still firmly believe you should be able to buy things like Dells without Windows (not just businesses), but Dell made a decision to always give it. *shrug*
Consumers buy what they want. Consumers want Windows, despite what the anti-MS people will try to tell you.

An insecure operating system cannot remain the world standard simply because a bunch of idiot soccer moms who cannot even spell "passwordd" like to buy Dells. Not only does a world standard product in general threaten innovation, it can also threaten security, like it does here. Microsoft is the devil, and like trees, we must "breakup" the devil.
And JohnT, if it's not a law, then I personally will make it one.

Or do you just suggest people stop using computers completely?

Wigggggggggggy!!
The simple fact of the matter is when your OS is popular, people try to hack it more. The more they try to hack it, the more they do hack it.
Believe me, MacOS wasn't designed with security in mind at all. Their security is obscurity.

Again, I've said no such thing.
Why is it that Mac users have such a hard time with basic reading comprehension, reasoning, and logic? I swear, 90% of them are "special"...

First off, you said you didn't know, and neither do I, so let's call it a draw and say it's the unhackable OS. Going with that, I am right. And I am not really a true mac user, since the last one I have is from the '90's. Good times.

You should become a lawyer, because you have that talent to take things completely out of context and use them to contradict opponents. I admire that, a little.
