I knew, when I posted it, that I'd left the opportunity for a Benny Hill devotee to rise from the murky depths. And so it goes.

Only if anyone is silly enough to watch it.

Finbar, you should get a gig writing for Neighbours, it would give you more time for civ as you wouldn't need to think very hard to write that crap

There is the small factor of professional credibility. I wouldn't research or teach at a polytechnic, and Finbar wont write for Neighbours.

World Movies is a better reason. As your folks will attest. They must have had conniptions when "In The Realm Of The Senses" was shown a couple of weeks ago. R-rated, and banned for about 20 years.

Quite.
I was in stitches in the 60's and 70's over the show.
But I watched it the other morning and there was one gag that gave me a totall belly laugh - couldn't stop laughing! Amazing really for a sexist anachronistic program...
I wish they'd show the really early B&W ones.

What other UK TV comedy exports do you get? Fawlty Towers is big in a few countries I think, and Monty Python.

They didn't get world movies - they're strictly Golden Years of Hollywood - we used to see Bill Collins regularly at Jannali shops when he lived with his mum.

Is there any chance that Horse and deity will actually speak to each other ? Just enough talking to start a game would be nice you can not talk to each other the rest of the time.

The cable channel UKTV is wall-to-wall with the stuff. Some classics - Python, Fawlty Towers, Yes Minister, and even the first run here of The Office - but mainly dross from the 70s, 80s and 90s. The ABC - our version of the BBC - tends to be the outlet for the Brit first-run series like Black Books, etc.

A classic of its time. Just a pity Ade Edmondson and Rik Mayall came back with "Bottom", not much more than a reworking of the same thing and nowhere near as good.
One of the greats. Particularly after the first series, when Ben Elton got involved in the writing.

Yes, we get the best and the worst of the world's output. As would you. The only ones who don't are the Yanks, who have so much local product there's no room for anyone else's. Not that they - in industry terms - think anywhere else exists.
The Office, IMHO, is one of the best Brit efforts in recent times. A remarkable achievement - concept and delivery - given the backgrounds of Gervais and his mate, neither of their CVs offered any promise they would pull if off. The last ep of the second series has some extraordinary moments of pure high quality drama. I'm looking forward with great interest to their next project. Can they do it again without just doing more of the same?
And I hope the "one last ep of The Office" that they're now doing will definitely be the last. Perish the thought that they succumb to Jennifer Saunders syndrome and thrash it to death ā la "Ab Fab", which showed signs that it had exhausted its potential back in its very first series.

I agree.........much as I love The Office they need to heed the example of Cleese with Fawlty Towers, for example, and get out whilst it's still good.
The best way to describe this show is painfully good.
