Tassadar (or other Russian nationalist) please help
I have a question about the leaders. I know the order is
Lenin
Stalin
Kruschev
Brezhnev
Andropov
(somebody was here)
Gorbachev
Who was the guy I missed, and also what years were each of them the leader?

I believe the guy you missed was Cherneko (spelling is off, sorry).
As for the years, you can look it up on google .

I'd be shot well in advance for other things that didn't involve mispelling the General Secretary's name .

Here's another question: Why did Ulyanov change his name? I know that Stalin means "steel", but what does Lenin mean?
"Joe Steel"... It's a tad corny, when you anglocise it like that.
... and yes it does.

You do realize that if you looked it up on Google you would have saved more time than doing what you did (posting it on Poly and then waiting for a response)?

Official soviet version- because of conspiration. Cops were hunting for them. A lot of Bolshevicks changed their names.

but what does Lenin mean?
|
Soviet version says that Ulyanov changed his name to Lenin, because he was hidding from police on bank of "Lena" river. He did spend some time living in forest near bank of this river when cops were looking for him, but unofficial version says different. It says that he changed his name because of woman whose name was "Lena" (Helen). And "Lenin" on Russian means- "Lena's man" (Helen's man, the guy of Helen)

I know that Stalin means "steel",

Wrong. "Stal" means steel. "Stalin" means "Steel made man"...or "Stal's man, the guy of Stal". Soviet version says that Djugashvili changed his name to 'Stalin" because he was like steel and had great tolerance to physical pain. Unofficial version says that he had some feelings to woman whose family name was "Stal". (She was revolutionary like him too).

Wrong. It should be "Joseph Steelman".

You missed two guys.
Between Stalin and Khrushev there was Lavrenty Pavlovich Beria- the cheif of NKVD. After death of Stalin he took the power, but was arrested after few days by group of generals and later shot as "enemy of the people". Ironic.

yeah he was a real sweety Beria. IIRC he cried and wept and generally behaved like a complete wuss when he was arrested.

In Finland, the "Superman" -comic book character is translated as "Teräsmies". "Teräs" means "Steel", so I almost always refer Stalin as "Georgian Teräsmies", or "Georgian Steelman" / "Georgian Superman".
