Help me find some games to submerge in
No, i'm not talking about submarine games. Summer is here which means alot of sun and fun and of course lots of spare time for playing games. So help me find some great games (pc).
I have played most RPGs (baldurs gate series, arcanum, fallout etc), Championship Manager and Civ-games alot so anything besides them.

Warcraft 3 sucks at SP though. It has no AI to speak of - just triggers and scripts.
SimCity 4 can be very engrossing.

Starcraft's always a good one. I tried Jedi Outcast and didn't care for it too much but some of my friends swear by it so you may want to check it out.

an excellent, often overlooked game - sid meiers gettysburg (and yes, reynolds was part of the design team IIRC) . It just might recruit you into the small, happy band of wargamers, and as a bonus, might give you an insight into the American experience of war. (dont know how hard it is to find over there)

For the moment I'm playing Deus Ex, which I find very good. I also enjoyed Medal of Honour Allied Assault, but I'm not into FPS (of any kind) so I can't say how it rates compared to other titles in the genre.
Homeworld: Cataclysm. Haven't finished it yet, but that's not because it didn't captivate me.

MoH:AA is a good FPS game. Other good ones are RTCW and BF1942.

I've heard that recording before.
Are those playable with Win XP by any chance?
I've just found out that Bloodmoon won't be here until the end of this month so I'm about to send off a mail order and was thinking about ordering Deux Ex as well ...

Thanks for the tips, though I have played most of them earlier.
Thief 2 is hard to find in any shop otherwise I would try that one. Keep em coming lads!

What about Half-Life? I recently bought a box called Half-Life: Generation or something like that, which bundled the original game with some blueish expansion pack and a game (add-on?) called Counter-Strike (or Counter-Force?), supposedly one of the big hits for MP.
Cost 30 USD, worth the bucks (haven't tried it yet)?

hmmm.....
Go to ebay
Buy an Amiga for about £20
Buy Speedball2, Cannonfodder and maybe a few other games(try to spend less than £20 for the lot).
For the price of a new console release you will get alot of fun, and it will be educational too(In the sense of computer and software development)

If you like FPS games at all it will be the best 30 bucks you've ever spent. Trust me. Install it right this second! If you're at work, then quit your job, go home and do it!
Seriously, it really is a fantastic game. IMHO it's still the best first-person shooter ever and will remain so for the next 4 or 5 months. The single-player game will be huge since you're getting the original game and two expansions (a green one where you play a marine, and a blue one where you're a security officer - they're both awesome).

Heh, heh, heh!
Yup, there were two expansions, I just couldn't remember the second colour.
Sounds great! Problem is I'm leaving soon, first for a couple of months and then (probably) for a year and I'm not bringing my desktop with me... I guess fall 2004 is when I'll install it...
What about Counter-Strike, is it a game of its own (i.e. not related to Half-Life)? The vendor told me it's still huge on the Net.

Counter-Strike is a game on its own and it is related to Half-Life.
Basically it started out as a team-based multi-player mod for Half-Life. Terroists.vs.Counter-terrorists. It was so hugely successful that it was eventually released as a full game. It's MP-only as far as I know. It's supposed to be great fun, but I've never played it.
Yes, it is still huge on the 'net. There will be about a million games you could join. However, it has a reputation has being a very l33t-haXXor kind of community. I'm sure plenty of mature people play it too, but be prepared to be called n00b if you go online.

If you're looking for a real cheap FPS try Red Faction. It's got a great multiplayer community considering it's age, and IMO it was nothing less than a crime against humanity to release RF2 without multiplayer. You'll probably be able to find it in bargain bins for between $6 and $12 dollars, and about 150 multiplayer servers are open at any given time (50 with a decent amount of people.) If you do get RF (NOT 2!), make sure to upgrade to 1.3

you can submerge in anything, but the only things that i would not recommend to submerge is: MMORPGs, and Magic: the Gathering. If you manage to be submerged on any one of those games, you'll end up cursing the guy that suggested you to try those games for the rest of your entire life.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, Thief works on WinXP, and I can only presume that the later ones will work as well.

Less discussion, name more games!
I'm going to the store tomorrow, thinking of buying that Half life set with all the expansions and perhaps something else.....
Thanks for the tips so far.
