You do realise how easy it would be to cheat in this artificial competition you've just created?

I dislike them, because they're awfully similar to Starcraft: Click-fest where the one with the best control of mouse and quickest reflexes wins, not the one with the most utilized brain-power.
...and he hasn't shown us his scores yet on those levels, has he?

Yeah, but I figure it's minesweeper, and cheating at minesweeper is just sad

Pfff. I had less than 120 on expert and even this isnt good enough. I think the world record is 53 or something.

My best two ever on expert were 54 and 58 seconds.

Were all the mines lined up around the edges or something? How the hell did you go that fast?

From my experience, the trick to the really fast scores is not to mark the mines.

Two handed. I used a mouse in one hand to move around, and a pen tablet in the other to do the actual clicking. The other part is just knowing the patterns and being able to eliminate questionable squares faster. I didn't get any huge breaks from the start, but I did get resolvable patterns almost all the way through, so I only had to guess a couple of times.
No matter what you do, there's a big element of luck, since you can always come down to two squares in a corner with one mine.

Ooo, Minesweeper. I used to play it a lot 6 years ago
My best is around 90 something, not as good as MtG's, but I only used one hand.

If you don't mark mines, you can't do the cool clicking with both buttons that opens up all the tiles touching a number with all its mines marked already. Thats how to get speed.

A long time ago, Minesweeper (together with Solitary) used to be the only game I had on my PC, and I could play it for days on end when I was really bored...
IIRC my record times are:
Beginner: 3 seconds
Intermediate: 16 seconds
Expert: 86 seconds
Not marking the bombs really holds you back as it forces you to think about which tiles are mines and which aren't -- and thinking is the last thing you need to do with this game...

One must train one's mind to see the patterns.

Anyone can edit the highscore data file for minesweeper under windows 9x. In XP they seem to have hidden it though.

My best scores suck, but I don't play that often. 311 on expert.

I rarely win at expert, because there is always an element of luch even in late game, and because I'm not automated enough not to think at all when playing minesweeper.
The few times I won at expert, it's a 600+

The minesweeper "cheat" isn't really a cheat. It's just editing the text file that holds the high score table.

I think there are tools that help you play as well: automatically mark bombs and open tiles that can't contain bombs, etc.
Pretty pathetic indeed if you actually use such tools...
