Becks contract ending in a couple of years is what is driving this. If ManU sell now they get a pile of money they can use to buy two or three good players and they will soon develop another high profile player so they won't lose out on merchandising.
If Becks goes now it will be big news and will boost his merchandising power, as well as put him in a better position to negotiate favourable personal terms, so he gets more money.
If he simply leaves at the end of his contract then there isn't the money in it for him or ManU. If he waits another year then other clubs will be reluctant to pay much for a player they might get free if they wait a few months longer.
The accountants will win and he will go, the only question is where.

Thats not what normally happens, when a player goes on a free, he's in a postion to demand more money, because he hasn't cost anything. If the total package for Beckham will cost Real 30m transfer free and 10M a year wages for four years, thats 70M. If Beckham goes on a free his team will negiotiate for at least some of that 30M to put into his wages. At an extra 5M a year salary, Real total cost is still 'only' 60M, so they've saved 10M by getting him on a free

I was under the impression that he would probably get a payment linked to the size of the transfer fee as part of his personal terms. Or is it no longer done that way?

A lot (most) of what the club saves on the transfer fee,is given to the player in extra wages/ loyalty bonuses etc. But whatever the happens the player makes extra money and the signing club saves money, the only loser is the players ex-club

Player normally gets 10% of the value of a transfer.

Yeah, sorry Cerb, I missed your point. In this situation, Beckham either gets 10% 30M + his wages, or, if he leaves on a free, most of that 30M incorperated on top of his wages.

The question really becomes whether the player is worth the money it will cost to obtain and keep his services.
In Beckham's case then as a means of the club making money the answer is probably yes. As an asset to the team as a footballer, no (just my personal opinion).

Ah, okay, that makes sense.
What I don't understand is Becks' popularity. It's rather puzzling.

In the UK a lot of it comes from the 98 world cup when he got sent off against Argentina for an act of petulence and was blamed for the loss, if you wern't in the country at the time you just cannot appriciate how much he was villified. The tabloids were suggesting he should be put on trial for treason, he got death threats he was getting obcence chants at football matches regarding he wifes sexual preferences. etc. It also didn't help that in addtion to being the most popular club in England, Man Utd are also the most hated
The fact that he's seems to have come through it in a dignified manner and not let the experience make him bitter (and got rid of the spoilt brat image) has certainly made him go up in some peoples estimation

Who's more important for MU fans, Sir Alex or Beckham?
|
Alex. With Beckham gone, we could get Kewell, Robinson and Ronaldhino and still have a few pennies over.

If United can get 30+ million pounds for him they would be foolish to turn it down.

Exactly. Effectively, by not selling him now, they are paying £15m each year for the next two years for him to stay. To Man United, that works out as an effective wage of £300,000 a week for Beckham. No-one is worth that.

Nothing wrong with that. Beckham's choice was to stay in Manchester for a few more years now it's her turn to choose...and hey, she might want to put that Spanish language she has been learning to good usage.

If I were Florentino, I'd go for Scholes. But as someone already said, what we need is a stopper, preferably Italian. An Argentine would do it as well.
Beckham in Barcelona would be hillarious. Poor guy

I hope we will sell a lot of T-shirt (and get a lot of our share in Beckham advertisements earnings) or, after Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo and Beckham we're going to be poor again
BTW, Have you realized that Figo cost more than Zidane, Zidane more than Ronaldo and Ronaldo more than Beckham?

Guti's already dropping not-so-subtle hints about wanting to move to ManUtd. That won't happen, though.
They can't afford to sell Mackelelelelele - they need at least one defensive minded person in the squad.

Guti doesn't like Beckham coming - that is clear. However, Guti is so useful for Real Madrid (he could play in such different places like Ronaldo's, Zidane's and even near Makelele), I hope he is not going. There are a lot of players I don't like too much and are not good enough for the Madrid, that dropping Guti will be so sad (I'm thinking in Flavio, Celades).
However, I also like Vicente Del Bosque, and it's not clear he is going to remain as coah of the team :'(

Apparently Barca are after him now. At least, that's what the media here are saying... I'd take it with a pinch of salt if I were you.
I think Kewell will end up with Arsenal, although if Barca will DO want him then that would be tempting for him. He'd be crazy to stay in Leeds.

It will interesting to see what barca can do next year (both what they can buy and where they will end up in the league.) It's not that easy to qualify for the CL in Spain, and not being able to attract top players might well them for a couple of seasons.
Barca has never been known for being able to build up a teeam with less known players. (as for example Valencia does or has done).
