Ok, further clarification - I'd like to set up these forums under a free service, where I can construct, bassline promote and troubleshoot the project over about a month or so. From there, I'd like to transfer the entire thing onto a no pop-up .com location that I pay for and can promote on a serious level. Is this possible, or will the transfer be a start from scratch assurance?

Thanks Sn00p
...and if I might ask, do you ever wander off into site design? I'm going to need graphic layout help, and trust your work. Feel free to PM me with details if you do that kind of thing

I think I just might go to go with EZboard after all. Well otherwise, what's the most expensive and spiffiest quality service?
Will, if you so desire - granted! I dunno if the subject of these boards would be to your tastes though

From Vbulletin:
Quote:
|
Minimum Requirements: vBulletin is designed to run on every server that has PHP 4.0.4 or greater and MySQL 3.23 or greater installed.
Recommended Requirements: For optimum performance, we recommend that vBulletin is run on a server that has MySQL 3.23.33 and PHP 4 (latest version) installed.
The software has been successfully installed on several different flavours of UNIX (including Solaris, and Redhat Linux), as well as Windows NT/2000/XP.

WTF??? So not only do I pay licensing and monthly no-pop up fees - I have to run the forums on my own server?!?!

You could just get one of those oldstyle boards that was popular 5 and 6 years ago

Zylka - I run an Ezboard atm (I hate it btw but it does the Job and the regulars like it for some reason).
Ikonboard is brilliant tho, I used to run one about 2 years ago when it wasnt even as good, I know f all about Internet code but managed to play about with the features and stuff - the amount of control is top dog.
Let me know if you set an Ezboard up, there are many things you'll need to know
Cheers
Matt

What kind of things will I need to know? I know absolutely NOTHING about coding, so a control panel with a relatively low learning curve is essential... big problem with icon board is the lack of being able to upload a customized skin - that seems limited

You may want to try MyIkonboard which uses Ikonboard (free with banner ads and abit restricted, or with a small monthly fee very good) or IPS Forum Hosting (small monthly price) with Invision Power Board. That's the easiest way to go, unless you go with free ezboard (and later updgrade to paid).

Ok, so do all boards run on your OWN dedicated computer - or is there a kind of system where you simply give them your credit card number and accept monthly charges, and they host it for you (in connection with a .com address)?

Well Ezboard runs remote on thier servers and you pay them thier monthly fee - if you want a .com simply buy one and redirect like i have done with englandforums.co.uk .
You woudnt want any board to run from your own PC (Unless it's a server and you have a T3 connection )

you could "rent" PHP and MySQL enabled webhosting, and pay others to run dedicated servers, and upload the needed files to it.
one such company is www.nomonthlyfees.com, though i grew weary of them and host my own site now.

That's what I imagined, but still see all of this mentioning of minimal PC hosting quark-bitrate x 10, 040 jigawibblies
The service with the best control panel for creation with MINIMAL code would be?

EZ would probably be simple enough for you...
I think it's what the EZ bit is for in the name

Well EZboard is possibly the only logical choice, then. Can someone post a page example of code for vbulletin? I'd like to know what exactly I would be tackling in learning

vBulletin is fairly easy to tweak if you know basic HTML, because all of the coding is contained in separate templates, and if you **** one up, it's got a revert to default option.
Separate from HTML tweaking, there are basic control panel options that are checkbox driven, so you can do things like set attachment size limits, file types, minimum time between posts, color schemes, etc.
Creation of forums, mod privileges, customized user access, etc. is also done easily from the administrator's control panel.
If you get vBulletin, I can help you install and set it up, then you can experiment with it on your own.

I although suggest Ikonboard or IBF with the hosting solutions I proposed, as it wouldn't be good for Zylka to waste cash on a vB license, if he doesn't know how popular the forums are, plus those are cheaper and easier solutions.

I wanna be a mod. But I demand to be able to ban 3 anti-Israelis per month with no reason.
