Homer Simpsons the greatest american- what's wrong with Brits?
You do realize he is not an actual person right?
Anyways there is a BBC poll, and they are supposed to have some special programme next week or so about the greatest americans.
I went to the website, and these are the current standings.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/wtwta/2959462.stm
Bill Clinton
3.55%
Bob Dylan
4.93%
Benjamin Franklin
4.14%
Thomas Jefferson
5.74%
Martin Luther King Jnr
8.56%
Abraham Lincoln
9.79%
Franklin D Roosevelt
3.70%
Homer Simpson
47.02%
Mr T
7.80%
George Washington
4.76%
First of all, Mt. T? Are the Brits still in the early 80's with regards to american television? How can Mr. T have so many votes. And Bill Clinton shouldn't even be on this poll.
Well here's my poll, it will include mostly presidents and I'm sure I'll forget some, but I don't feel like researching this poll

I'm voting for good old Ben Franklin. Innovative, hard working, hard playing Ben Franklin -- the American Ideal.

Did you not read my post above?
And I'll point out that its not a British survey, its an internet poll being hosted by the BBC. Also, for many, Homer Simpson is probably the most famous American character.

Do you not feel you are undermining your own case by having as one of your choices for "greatest American" named as "That other guy"?

I think it could be the amount of airtime the show gets - Homer does get more than most Americans on Brit TV.
Plus he's very popular as being a more true to life character than just about any US President, musician (Elvis had a dark side, remember) or actor that gets airtime.
Not that surprising if you think about it.

Bill Clinton? Come on!! Sure he's a progressive, but FDR was also a progressive- and he accomplished a whole lot more. Exactly what did Clinton accomplish? *crickets chirp*
It was a tough call voting for Martin Luther King jr. over the founding fathers. Both did great things. They stood up for what they believed was right against massive opposition from the other side. King had the greatest risk to his life only matched by George Washington I'd say. So it was a close call choosing him over George Washington.

From a Brit perspective, he told the IRA to get their butts into the peace process or face their NORAID being axed. More than any other US Pres has done for the Ulster situation.
