I bought a mere $30 of booze today and was not IDed.
So this means one of two things:
I look like I'm without a doubt over 18
The cashier thought I'd be impressed with her for not IDing me to the point of asking her out or something
Seeing as I'm not totally vain (yet), it couldn't be the second one. And I wasn't aware I looked without-a-doubt over 18.
So the problem is likely she's a lazyass who doesn't care.
So, who gets in trouble if the cops knew?
Would the cashier? The store's manager?
What would the punishments be?
Just an intrigue thread.

around here, usually the only punishment is a warning to the store's owners

The clerk will usually get a fine and fired.

In Aus, the cashier gets a fine, the person who owns the liquor license for the store also gets a fine. They can also revoke the license, meaning the store is shut down.

here, if it's a sting operation, the store will get slapped with a fine around $500 to $1000 depending on the record of the store. I've seen some news reports where the owner of the store gets arrested for repeat offenders.
Crazy.

You report them to ALCB. You tell ALCB that there is no way any reasonable person could assume you are 18, and you were not ID'd.
If they see you, they will send real 16 year olds (who look old) into the store to purchase spirits. If the kids can walk out of the store with the beer, the owners are in for serious hurt. Fines and or shut down depending on history.
Christ, bylaw officers are doing that to stores with cigarettes (different agencies though). I doubt the ALCB will tolerate alcohol to minors. Assuming of course that they have the staff to be able to afford to care.

Well, I honestly bet THAT was the case!
Younger cashiers generally don't ID if you're alone, not nervous, look like a geek, and not bringing a park party themed purchase to the counter (single crappy 8 oz hard alcohol + case of Canadian/Kokanee, and/or 5 4-packs of peach coolers, and/or ANYTHING to do with 40oz malt liquor)
Fine for the liquor stores can hit the $5000 mark, and repeated offences can result in loss of license

"Sting" operations are pure victimisation; more often than not they'll pick 17-year-olds who don't look a day under 21.

I don't see how you can fine someone for serving a person that is legally entitled to buy...

When I was underage the guy at our local off-license once told us he couldn't serve us because he'd just got a police warning so we went next door. Was Ok again a couple of weeks later though.
