3rd patch announcement: do you think this is serious???
Hi,
I bought this game following fantastic reviews and proud announcements like "RON goes gold on 20 May".
Now we are on 19 June and we are at the second set of corrections, with the third one just being announced!!!
I spend 50 euro for the game, I am spending additional money to download the patches (not really light if you are on a narrowband connection!!!).
take 8 mega per patch that makes 3 hours of connection on the REAL speed of 56kbit connection.
time and money lost.
I just think that this is not a serious way of doing things. Microsoft and BHG should publicly apologise for having sold a product which was everything but not ready to be sold!!!
Ciao
Bacca from Italy

The game was fine, the patches just fixed up the multiplayer side of things.
I think you should be thankful they have been so swift to fix these minor problems.

Get a new driver for your SB Live card - that is what is causing the game to crash.

Yes. I turned sound off completely and it worked... until the next time I restarted. Still working on getting mine actually running.

I did try before I bought. The demo ran fine on my computer. The full version, alas, kills my comp.

I bought the game for $50 today and it has well and truly fuctup my computer. I had to rip out the beating bloody heart of RON from my hard drive, and then tear out the .dlls one by one like agonizing bare nerve endings, pulsing and festering in the cold, cold air.
Then I had to reinstall an older version of DirectX from a very old game and voila! My older games still work, and RON goes back to the shop for a refund with nary a backwards glance.
I remember slamming Civ3 for the steaming crock of odure that it was. But RON breaks all my previous records for short-term patience loss. It's very rare that a game not only fails to let me play it, but takes a dump on the rest of my system while it's at it. And all within half an hour of purchase!
I don't care how good the game is. There are some things about which I have absolutely no sense of humor whatsoever, and fucking up my laptop system is way up on the list.
I am very angry with Microsoft and BHG.

wow. really does seem like the game has two modes of play:
good/rocksteady/smooth
and
not at all.
maybe the shaders and the dx9 requirement wasn't such a good idea after all?

DL == double login. it usually means that the poster things that you, the user, are an alternate handle for a regular poster who can't be arsed/is too cowardly to post his thoughts under his own handle, or is using that handle to post deliberately trollish thoughts.
it's usually accompanied by the dl dance.

I agree with Bacca and Magni. Rise of Nations plainly sucks! Now i mean not the gameplay, its excellent, the graphics, which are fair enough (even though they are pretty sucky on my computer, which is brand new and totally updated) I mean the speed, which is audaciously slow, almost everything makes the game crash, and it screws up my computer! Worst of all, now, i cant download the patch! i HAVE NEVER had so many problems with a game! Even Age of Mythology ran MUCh MUCH better than this! And it isnt my computer's fault, because a have a billion other games and they work just perfectly! And by the way the game's producers definetly rushed the programmers, or so it seems, because the game is totally raw, and besides it was supposed to go gold in november 2003! It is as if i am playing a beta, the game is totally bugged, and undone.

it appears that bhg's game may have suffered from marketing incorrectly listing the minimum system requirements.
how many users who can't run it have a dx9 compatible card?
how many users have a video card that has more than 16mb video ram? perhaps having a minimum of 32mb of video ram is better?
then other things seem to be less than stellar programming-- creative and sound blaster are industry standards. even if the drivers are old, it oughtn't lead to such a dramatic slowdown.
ah, well.

what makes me really mad, are the Hardware specs, on the cover, sounded great for a laptop game, that does not need a fancy GPU, well here i am €50 poorer, and searching in my law book for the definition of fraud...

Specs have nothing to do with it. Some people have only the bare requirements to play it and it still runs, albeit slowly. Others, such as myself, have way over the recommended specs - yet the game continually crashes the system.
While the game is fun, that fact is useless to me if I can't even play for more than 15 seconds (literally) at a time.

I run it on my laptop (1.2 GHz pentium 3 mobility, crappy ATI radeon m6 mobility) and it runs well (start around 20 fps, final huge battles around 7 fps, slow but still playable).

ron runs fine on my pc with the exception of a few corrupt save games. only problem is the slow frame rate but then it is most probably due to my very old 500mhz PIII more than anything else

hi,
my personal opinion is... it's your graphics cards. the game works great on my NVIDA video card. my friend does not have an NVIDA video card and the game gives him trouble sometimes.
that is one reason why i got an NVIDA video card... most games are build with them in mind.

Damn, I really hope that BHG will come with a patch which fixes these problems soon! It's really starting to get on my nerves!
UPDATE: I changed soundcard drivers and it didn't help a thing!!

I changed soundcards and it still didn't help.
The problem is definately RoN's, and the problem (at least in my and a few other peoples case) is occurs with those who have a GeForce 4.

What is your full system stats Nacht?
For comparison, I have:
CPU: Athlon 1GHz
Memory: 512Mb
Mobo: Asus A7V kt133
Sound: Soundblaster Live
Graphics: GeForce 4 Ti 4600
Driver: 40.72 (ms signed)
and it keeps crashing.
