Any server will experience technical difficulties regardless of their configuration or how much is paid for them. The most recent downtime incident, which occurred yesterday, was as extended as it was for what was stated in the corresponding report [ see http://apolyton.net/about ]: neither Markos nor myself being online or available to go online to make or put in for the necessary correction. It was honestly just "one of those things", to coin a phrase.
As for why the server went offline in the first place and required human intervention to reboot it, the most likely reason was due to excessive CPU (processor) load and a significant drain on available memory for a prolonged period.

Ah! The coveted memory leak! Have you tried FreeMem Pro? It'll automatically free memory when it reaches a critical level.

Do you think we could sue Rackspace for false advertising? After all, their schtick is fanatical support, always up.
(But now I know the truth...when their ads say 99.9% uptime, the 00.1% is always Apolyton )

hm... we seem to have had trouble with the servers lately. growing pains, i suppose.
well, here's to hoping they work themselves out.
although i have to admit, when i went to the rackspace site, i first read the "an ev.1 company" as "an evil company".

Just an off the wall question: When was the last time anyone archived the threads in the various forums? Does that help with the server issues?

However, they do it. I remember they used to have the various forums periodically archive the old threads and I wondered if that helped the server load.

I'm pretty sure they already do that, if not automatically then manually. I posted in the Dinosaur forum about a month back and it was the only post there. Now it's gone and the forum's empty again. All the install instructions and walkthroughs are gone from the MOO1/2 forum as well. Maybe they should cut the OT down to two pages total or close it during busy periods.

That is because of the way you view a forum. Forum default is to only view threads that have been active in the last thirty days.
Try looking at this link and you'll see your thread is still there: http://apolyton.net/forums/forumdisp...&daysprune=365

Most of those memory-freeing applications are snake-oil; they just force the system to swap out to disk whatever memory is in use, thus freeing your physical memory but not actually releasing any resources. I can't find anything on FreeMem's site to indicate it works any different (lotta buzz, no specifics on how it works). They may mask the problem of a memory-leaking application for a time, but ultimately can't solve it.
Feel free to prove me wrong, though, I never have heard of this one before.

Ah. Reading is fundamental. I don't think I noticed this happening until we moved to Settler II. Damn my ignorance!

It takes the least active info and switches it to disk. Does it matter if it kills the process as long as it's not using valuable resources? That doesn't prove you wrong or even give a best practice solution but unless they can schedule an http service recycle it may be a way to extend the crash before it burns. Just a thought.

It would irrationally upset people, thereby fulfilling my goal of blocking anyone from having a good day.
Take a look at http://apolyton.net/forums and look through the lighted forums. The one that is consistently lit is OT. It gets hammered more than any other forum and since it's not a gaming thread, per se, and this is not a general topic site, exactly, then I assumed that blocking this forum would kill traffic that takes away from the crown jewels of this site. Forwarding this idea makes an @ss out of me (since we didn't assume) but it's something to consider.

D'oh! Rack shack should start a "always on" schtick so we can sue them.
Dammit, all the racks out there..."Rackshack", "Rackspace", "Bigracks"...oh...site hosting...
