Happy Juhannus(midsummer) Everyone!
Happy Juhannus Everyone!
Juhannus is the name for traditional Finnish Midsummer-festival for the night without sun setting at all..
In Helsinki sun sets at 22.50 and rises at 3.54 am. In Oulu(northern Finland) sun sets at 0.21 am and rises at 2.18 am
We party all day, all night, because it never really gets dark. People just go absolutely crazy. It's the second biggest party/holiday of the year for us. How about you? How do you celebrate midsummer back home, if at all? I know at least scandinavians do.
ps, I guess I wont be sleeping much either saturday night, it helps that my biological clock usually just flips out at Juhannus

It's the biggest and oldest celebration here... from pagan times. They drink a lot, eat whatever the national food here is, stay up all night, and jump over fire.
I know I should know more details, but I don't... however, you get more congratulations these days than even on New Year, so it's important. In cities, all kinds of public feasts are made.

Thats almost the same we do here. We eat a lot of beef and sausages, drink beer or booze, and dance around huge bonfires. Pagan ritual? Sure, of course.
I guess we have somewhat same traditions and beliefs as you do, afterall were almost neighbourgs..

Drunk orgy, sounds familiar
It's funny, I had this jewish australian friend of mine visiting Finland last fall. It was his first visit to Finland and we were going out to check Helsinki nightlife. Anyway, we were starting up at my friends flat, drinking mostly beer. We finns say "kippis" for cheers and as we said this our australian friend suddently started laughing his ass of. Later he explained that kippis sounded very much like australian/english expression "get pissed". Well, i think that it captures the finnish way of drinking pretty well anyway.

Tomorrow evening is the Music Day in France (an as far as I heard, in other parts of the world as well). The best day of the year to spend in Paris IMHO
However, it is a very young tradition, as it dates back to the 80's.

Music Day, the best day in Paris? How come, what's happening there?
A young tradition..speaking of traditions one of the best french writers to describe them was Marcel Mauss in his "l'Essai sur le don"

Not israeli? Oh, sorry I didnt know. I'm glad you liked the mp3, although I must admit it's a little melancholic, as we Finns like it. It's one of the few things people here recognize to be Russian slavic influence.

No, it's just beatiful. Although hearing that in the right mood can make you feel a little suicidal It reminds me of few years back when I was 15 and the world was a virgin to me. I guess we Finns are after all quite sentimental, even Kimi Räikkönen

Actually, I'm swedish.. and I described the kind of activites swedish people engage in at midsummer Besides eating lots of weird food and drink alcohol that is. I'm quite pleased I'm not compelled to participate.

Many people who play music as a hobby go on the streets and play, while the bystanders enjoy the show, and sing along or dance. Even though the day itself is planned, the musicians and bystanders are spontaneous.
A few well-known artists give a free concert in some big plaza. This is the day where every Parisian goes out on the street to party, and this is the day where an excellent mood lies on Paris (and other French cities as well).

On saturday? Our midsummer's eve was on friday. The Swedish tradition has both maypoles and copious amounts of alcohol, so we get the best of both worlds really.

I'm back alive! Praise the Lord!
3 days of haaaaaaaaard drinking. It was crazy.. drink till you pass out, wake up and start drinking right away. This was like marathon, and I'm sure my heart feels that way too. But was it fun? YEAaaaaaaas!
Funny how people who only eat BBQ food and drink alcohol can fart so much when it's time to sleep.
On the third night neighbours came to visit us and we asked if we were bothering them with our massive soundsystem that was installed inside and outside as well.. 'well.. we can hear the music but it's ok.. '. I bet they were ready to kill someone.. just being nice.
All in all, it was a success.
PS. It's fun to play Twister when you're super drunk, I recommend it. Do the 'naked twister', it's pretty much the most fun social game if there are 2 girls and 2 guys. Just try to avoid getting into weird position next to the other guys crotch or butt.
