Here's a .bix with my settings, using the graduated tech cost scaling I described earlier. For the 1.25x cost techs, I rounded in the direction of an even number when faced with a choice, so Philosophy is cost 8 and Literature and Code of Laws are cost 12. Note that I replaced the Standard map size with my 250x250 monster; I figured I'd leave room to add two smaller and two larger sizes later on the off chance that I might want to someday. Dominae should be able to add a custom map to this to set up our official scenario, and the .bix can also be used as is to generate your own monster map games with whatever settings you want. (If someone wants to experiment with how well my tech settings work, you're welcome to; I'd love to do it myself but I won't have time.) Note that this is based on standard rules, not on the AU Mod.

I'll get on to it. No AU mod. I hope everyone (alexman included!) has fun on this one.

WOOHOOO! I'm rarin' to start! All this talk of tech/research changes boggles me, I'll leave it to the experts. I'll just try to enjoy playing the results.

Schweet!!!!!
I haven't played Civ3 in over two weeks now. I dunno, 208 kinda made me lose interest in the game for a while. But the last couple of days I've been itchin' to get back into it. Now this comes along.
Good job guys. I like the idea a lot too. I just hope my computer can handle it.

I don't despise them, it's my P3 500 that does...
for that same reason count me out..
(which'll also give me more time to actually finish AU208 since I've only played like 50 turns... from what I'm hearing it's worse than I thought... )

AU307 (this game) will be ready later on in the day sometime (just in time to think about the game all day Friday at work!).

Wow it took aout 18 seconds to gen a map using that bix. It went 3/4 done instantly and then paused for about 17-18 seconds before finishing.

Seems I missed out on all the discussion of game parameters and just get to play the game with the changes suggested by those with more interest and knowledge in making it all work well . . .
Mission accomplished

Really only Nathan and Dom had any impact so don't feel bad. The rest of us are just along for the ride.
At least we will not have to wait long to start the abuse, I mean fun.
Thanks to both BTW.

I'm really looking forward to this. I have a three day weekend coming up and nothing planned. Well, now I have something planned. Hopefully my wife doesn't mind.

Alexman contributed the idea of modifying tech costs so research can be viable in the early game without being super-easy later on. I went about it a bit differently from how he would have, but he deserves the credit for the basic idea (and I deserve the blame if the implementation turns out to be a disaster ).

No blame, it will either be fun or it won't. If not we will all just bail out.
No harm done. It is really an attempt to try something differnt and adds to the life of the game.
Some (maybe me) will find that is more work than they want, some will find the game is killing their machine, but hopefull all will get something out of the game.

...and rail against the creators. Seriously though, kudos to nbarclay, Dominae, Alexman, and all the rest who have put together the various AU courses. You've made our lives a living...well you've made it more fun at least.
Keep up the good work and can't wait to play this one.

Let's start with a screenshot, so that you can all discuss while I get the game threads up.
Try not to pick Industrious, everyone!
As promised, this will be a long and challenging game. It is definitely beatable on your normal difficulty level, but because of the distance between islands, it is going to take an extended period of time to gain the upper hand. Just a warning for those who play for UP.

Good timing - I should have a monkey off my back by tomorrow, meaning time to play some civ on a truly huge map. Hope my laptop can habdle it
I think I'll play England or one of the more traditional sea-faring civs to roleplay a bit . . .

Interesting start. I haven't decided which Civ to play yet. I usually use China or France, but I didn't think they were options. I might try an expansionist, since I've never really used that trait before.
Off Topic:
Dominae - what Graphics mod do you use? I really love the Impresionist-esque landscape graphics I see in your posts. I've been checking out everyone's graphics mods and like that one best.

We only had one ind civ, right? If I play any expansion civ it would have to be Abe. Got to see which one are available as I forgot half of them.

Looks like the watercolor mod.
I'll probably take Spain, btw. England is tempting, but expansionist seems a bit useless on this map.

Americans
Carthaginians
English
Greeks
Spanish
Vikings
