AI's in MP Games
Inspired by another thread...

Our group usually plays without AI's in MP games. However, if somebody drop out or has to leave for the evening, in many cases, the rest will continue on.

What are the differences that you see in having AI's in the game.

For us, the big difference is city bribing... While we don't allow it, the AI doesn't follow that rule. The minute an AI takes over, I start padding my bank account more than I might normally do to make it more expensive for the AI... I also patrol more agressively around my cities near the AI to keep those units from strolling up and bribing my cities...

How do having AI's in the game effect your strategy?

I'll find that mountain on the border with civ's that I'm at war with. (which is usually everyone ) and put that vet defensive unit on along with a dip and watch the AI pummel itself against it.

And I will make a beeline towards their land with settlers since the AI usually stops expanding. (at least relative to Human Players)

And finally, besides some of the patrol techniques that MIng mentioned) I'll station some dips in reach to bribe border cities back. And disband multiple move units from possible target cities. So they can't bribe the city then use that unit to pick off the diplo. One doesn't need much mobile defense against the AI's "one unit at a time offense".

The most annoying thing that even though we play that you must decline all contacts attempts, sometimes your wussy senate decides otherwise.

Especially when your opponent moves those cats up next to your city, and the senate won't let you attack them. You have to revolt to save the city and may spend a few turns in anarchy.

That works against the AI, but not against most humans.

But I guess there's still a few trade whores out there.

Once or twice over the years we added AIs when we were dueling to try to add some spice. Needless to say, we haven't done that in a long time.

We played the bribe the ai rule last weekend - hydey and trev played. There were 7 civs, 4 ai. I didn't see any bribing going on but hydey hammered the Aztecs destroying most of their cities.

The practice was allowed mainly to get the f*ckers out of the game more quickly and because they'd do it to us.

Later in the game when players have more cash I expect to see the ai civs "bought out".

I always figured if you allowed that, the person that was located nearest would have to great of an advantage, since it's so much easier to wipe out an AI vs a Human opponent.

Yep, which really annoys me when your city grows and it picks a square to work thinking you're in 1x.

the game places for growth not trade or production which means the human player will always be handicapped against the ai..even though its a small handicap....kinda like my golf game

He on the other hand may feel insulted.

Can be the case.

Otoh, if one player is constantly subject to ai attacks and the other players aren't, then it can be a big disadvantage because the others will zoom ahead. So we've taken the view in past games that its better to get them out of play as quick as possible by any means.

We usually only get ai civs these days when a player drops out of the game.

not so easy on 1x without bribing - the effort of fighting could put you too far behind on science and wonders. If you get an agggressive ai next to you it can be a real pain - like getting a barb hotspot.

really 1x and 2x are totally different games.

Yes, but like you guys, we don't start with an AI, so by the time someone leaves you have the infrastructure in place, so fielding the army necessary to take it out isn't a problem. I'll take an AI next to me rather than Berz or War4.
