It's two different things, One was for barbs level, and the other was for difficulty level. i.e extreme unhappiness. I'm not interested in playing that, but boosting the barb level could be fun.

But I can't remember if the upper barb level gave them a larger attack bonus. It would make sense though.

If you search on decent terrain (which is plentiful on our worlds) you don't lose many. But I usually don't explore with them either. Unless they're a few squares in front of a settler.

My favorite way to open huts is with a boat and any 2 movement unit - hop back on the boat if barbs pop up.
