Most of those posts are from many months ago, not recently.
And the groups just built up and I never get around to taking out the old ones.

It could be that the smiley hasn't finished loading all the frames, so doesn't play. Or one or more frames weren't transferred properly and Settler2 was under too much stress to be bothered fixing it.

I'd think avatars take a little bit more bandwidth than smileys. And what purpose do they serve any way. Turn 'em off!
I don't think turning off smileys would cause any noticeable improvement in performance, but I could, of course, be wrong.
EDIT: Pfft, It looks from other threads that the avatars have already been turned off for a while... Of course, I wouldn't know, as I turned them off through the control panel, but that kinda ruins the little bit of sarcasm up there.

I've seen your avatar. Why would you want to have an avatar, when you turn them off?

You are able to tell at a glance who wrote what. And much easier than reading the name text.

I agree with the proposal. ASCII smileys look much cooler than graphical ones anyway.

This option has been considered in the past, and again in the present. The decision now remains the same as it was then: smilies will not be disabled for the time being.

I can get so confused when everyone has the same flag in a thread, as to who posts what.

Wishful thinking.
But it is good to know we at least will be keeping our smilies for the time being.
Thanks Dan.

Yeah, the avatars do assist in poster recognition. The flags were nice at first, but I could live without them.

Prehaps Mark should remove the avatar since Zylka made it.
Speaking of Zylka, he agrees with me on this issue. We were just talking about that party smiley. What's up with that? Zylka mentioned it looks like a bunch of dancing 7 up spots. It's not even a real smiley.

I could live without flags.
I am concerned with these anti-smilie activists. First they'll take our smilies. Then they'll take our avatars. Then they'll take our abilty to post text.
We have to draw the line, before its too late.

I can live without much of the things we have here at apolyton, but the smilies is not one of those! They are too important IMHO. It's ugly with those smilies that just is text. But whan that is said, we could survive with less smilies...!

Take a look at this f*cking emoticon, and tell me how exactly that's a "smilie":
I just can't stand that thing... but it's not half as bad a this:
Look at how sh*tty they are - ESPECIALLY the guitar player
