Civ 2 M players Rise of Nations thread
I thought it might be useful for the civ 2 MPer's to have a thread here where those of us who have RoN can discuss it amongst ourselves - and others can decide whether to buy it or not.
I've played a few games and I like it quite a lot. It has some of the weaknesses of RTS games - like the cheesy diamond maps and gamescale but RoN makes up for this with some enthralling gameplay and "TBS" style game management.
My last game saw my civ defeat 3 civs in a huge battle which included nuclear exchanges. I fielded 4 armies with about 40 units each.
It does have that "one more turn" quality - though there aren't any turns as such.
I think its well worth checking out.

Actually I was also going to buy it this weekend, but golf, naps and watching the cubs/sox series seemed to fill the weekend.

makeo is ticked off cos he doesn't have his comp with him.
There is a game called barbs at the gate where you have to hold out against sustained attack by a number of civs against a time limit. That's fun.
It also has teams for MP.

I've heard it referred to as the next generation TBS. I had to laugh at that one.

That's what you would normally think. That is why I was kind of surprised by the TBS reference.

not me, i hear tbs is really on the decline now that rts has become way more popular and alot more strategic....
i think civ games of this genre are on their way out..... and the rts we see now, are a display of what we can expect .
that said, there will always be some sort of tbs, but as graphics get better and memory gets bigger, so to will the strategy involved in rts games, teens like things that move....its the old guys who prefer tbs

And old guys have a considerable higher disposable income, so we're still a force in the market place. And these young shooter types will get older some day too.

true, but the market is driven by what teen/young adults want, not by what the old guys buy....
reality dictates that many will try games/dl them from p2p sharing etc first...then decide if they want them.....
i wonder if more young people play consoles or computer games still...consoles suck for strategy

As more people join the older crowd, their needs will become more important.

RoN is a good game. As I said before though it is not is very different from a bunch of other good RTS games...........sure there are a few tweaks, and well implemented ones at that, but if you like this you'll like AOM and Warcraft3 as well.
The fact that Brian Reynold's did this game seems to have lead to the game being sold as the TBS'ers RTS. Cunning, but not really true IMO.

Yeah, I'll see after I eventually play it. It will have to be good to get over my previous RTS experiences.

You can set the game to slow or very slow.
I'm playing"assasin" at the moment. This is where you have to destroy a civ whilst another civ is trying to destroy you. If you destroy your target, another civ gets nominated. You don't know which civ is targeting which other civ. The last surviving civ wins.

This assassin mode, you know who is targeting you and who you have to target but you cn't enter the territory of your assassin without massive attrition damage. So you basically end up fighting a defensive battle on one front and an offensive battle on the other.
I just took out my target and have moved onto my second.
