Apolyton Travelling Records
On your home continent, what was the northmost, southmost, westmost and eastmost you've ever travelled to? Ever left your hoem continent? Where to? Also tell us second and third ranks! For me:

Northmost: Bodö (where's that letter in ascii?) in the north of Norway. Crossed the polar circle, saw elks, polar plains (like tundra, 1,000m above sea, way cool!) and fjords. Didn't get as far north as Narvik or the Lofotes (sp?) though, would have liked that record. Apart from that, Hirtshals in Denmark on another holiday.

Southmost: Naples, the sh!ttiest city of Europe. Italy is bad with waste, but that city tops it all. Climbed the Vesuv, saw a sunset over the sea with Naples in nice blue light. That was on a school trip to Rome with an extra tour to the Vesuv. Aaprt from that, been to the Côte d'Azur (Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Monaco) as well as Lake Garda and the Adriatic, seen Venice and Padua too.

Westmost: Paris. Not much too say, a bit overrated methinks, I was only 14 or 15 though, might be because we lived in la Défense. Been to Disneyland as well . Apart from that, said Côte d'Azur trip was quite far in the west, as well as 2 Amsterdam visits, one of which was a polymeet.
I intend to top this with London and, if possible, Manchester

Eastmost: Kosice, Slovakia. Was a student exchange programm in school, quite nice town (German founded anyway) and landscape. Apart from that, Budapest, Danzig. Hungary is filthy, the Polish baltic coast a dream.

Share your touristic climaxes!

PS: Never left the continent.

East/South: Sinai... Is Sharm El Sheikh Africa or Asia?

Mind you, I reckon MtG, Lornestar or maybe Dissident are going to have the records by a long way... Lord Merciless is a definate contender too.

Northernmost would be some place north of the arctic circle in Finland we were at once about 25 years ago.

Southernmost would probably be Naples, also in the 70s.

Westernmost is Dublin.

Easternmost would likely be Kotka in Finland...hang on...is Cyprus part of Europe?

Other continents:

North America:

Northernmost, I'm not too sure, probably LA.

Southernmost, probably some ruin in the Yucatan, but possibly Hawaii (OK, that's not part of the continent).

West - LA (or Hawaii ).

East - Atlanta

Asia:

North - Goa.

South/East - Singapore.

West - Maldives.

Africa:

North - Luxor

South/West - Lagos

East - Aswan

Oceania:

North - Fiji

South - Christchurch, NZ

West - Perth

East - Tahiti (might also be the most northerly, not sure).

I've been as far north as Cold Lake, Canada, and as far south as LA in USA (eastwards limit New York City).

In Europe I've been as far north as Durham, UK and as far south as Rome, Italy. I've been to France, Germany, and Switzerland as well.

In Asia I've been as far north as Hohhot in Inner Mongolia, and as far south as Indonesia. Within China, I've been to Harbin (extreme northeast, nearly on the border with Russia - very cold!) down to Hong Kong (the armpit of China - wet and smelly), along to Lijiang in the west (beautiful scenery - we stepped off the plane and the airstrip seemed suspended in a sea of mists between two breathtaking mountain ranges).

I've never been to South America, Africa, or Australia.

Europe:

Northmost: Durham, UK. Saw the university and the Cathedral, and a few other local delights.

Southmost: Malta. Damned hot when I went. Everyday was +40C. After being dragged on that holiday I vowed never to go to a hot country in the height of summer again.

Westmost: Aberystwyth Wales, or Carnac, France. There isn't much in it. I got to see the monoliths in Carnac before they got cordoned off.

Eastmost: Ignoring Malta again, probably Venice. Nice place but very expensive from what I recall.

Outside of Europe.

Northmost: Alaska somewhere. Stopped off overnight on a flight to Hawaii.

Westmost: Hawaii.

Eastmost: Tokyo. Lived there for a couple of years when I was a nipper.

Southmost: To date, Singapore. Will be Oz or NZ in the near future.

Northmost: Newcastle, Tyne and Weir...quite sad really as it is only about 200km north of where I live already...and that is only once, the only time I have been north of Yorkshire, and that was to drop Scabrous Birdseed at the ferry terminal

Southmost: Giza, Egypt...yeah, where the pyramids are...that is the furthest south I have been.

Eastmost: Famagusta, Cyprus...well, not into it as it is Turkish occupied but right up to the border...I don't think I have been further west than that...

Westmost: Lisbon, Portugal...and what a nice city too I thought...I've never crossed the Atlantic, but in terms of anywhere inhabited in Europe, this is pretty much as far west as you can get...

So there you have it. I was almost going to have Israel as my eastmost as I was going to go on holiday once there as a kid but had to withdraw at the last moment...

I live in North America so the northern & western most was Anchorage, AK the southern most was Panama City (Are we considering Central America to be in North America?) and the eastern most (again in North America) was Gander, Newfoundland.

Edit: I noticed some people were putting world wide and not just contental information so the furthest west (east for you Euros ) was the Burmese-Thai border while the furthest east Thessaloniki in Greece. The north and south info remains the same.

West: Carnac (Hi, Big Crunch. Saw the Monoliths also), or Blackpool

Of course, in the air, I went further down south, north and west, as you can see:
North America:
North: San Francisco
South: San Diego
East/West: Not worth to mention, except you accept changing planes at Chicago...

Africa: No extension worth to mention, I've been in Luxor.
Except: Karnak (a village 3 km north of Luxor, and still the old Thebes you all know from Civ. Haven't been in Thebes, Greece, yet.)

North, I've been to Utsjoki in Lappland, I think it's the as north as finland goes. But have crossed the border to Norway from Lappland and went to some location, I'm was too young to remember what it was called, so it's either that or Utsjoki. Pretty north.

South.. I guess it would be Malta. Now that I think of it, I've been pretty much as north as you can go, and as south as you can go..

The funny thing is many Americans have traveled much more widely then the supposedly "well-traveled" Europeans. Is another stereo type bitting the dust?
