Olympic Selection 2010
Place your bets, folks!
You only have one day to vote before the IOC makes their decision, so make it count!
Personally, I think Salzburg is the best choice, but politics will probably hand the bid to Vancouver this time around. I won't complain.
Also, HAPPY CANADA DAY! (Am I crazy, or was there actually no 'Happy Canada Day' thread? I'm shocked AND appalled! )

Ah, the Beijing controversy. That was a good ol' time.

It's North America's turn for the Olympics again.

Pretty sad list of cities. It was bad enough when the IOC sullied themselves by giving the Olymipics to Beijing, but an Olympics in Pyeongchang might be even worse.

Hey, there ain't nothing wrong with Vancouver! It's a be-yoo-ti-ful city. And Salzburg! Oh, man, Salzburg has got class up the wazoo! Both cities would make fine hosts (Salzburg especially, in regard to transport and facilities).
Ah well, ANYTHING will be better than Salt Lake. Blech.

In believe Reno, Nevada is going to make a bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics. This area hosted them once back in the 60's.
I want to say Vancouver in 2010, but Hell with it, I'll vote Salzburg.

China is at least TRYING to look like it is a civilized nation worthy of hosting an event that promotes some of the best qualities of Humanity.
Can North Korea say the same...?
|
dude, pyeongchang is in south korea. it's in kangwondo, a province in the northeastern part of south korea. the village itself is less than an hour and half east south east of seoul and two hours northeast of daejon. seoul is north of pyeongchang.
that's why i've seen it... if it were in the north, i would either a) not have seen it, b) not have returned to america, c) never been allowed into s korea again, or d) b and c.
what's probably causing the confusion is that kangwon province is actually split between north and south korea? of course, the provincial gov't of kangwon in south korea has no jurisdiction over the part in nkorea, and vice versa.
maybe another factor adding to the confusion is that the nkorean olympic committee suggested that there could be a unified korean team if the olympics landed there...

Who's heard of Pyeongchang before? I sure haven't. Let's face facts; South Korea only has one Olympic-caliber city and 1988 wasn't that long ago. It'll be a while before Korea sees the Olympics again.
edit: I just realized that 2010 is a Winter Olympics year, so it is inevitable that some crap town gets picked. As such, I rescind my comments about Pyeongchang. It wouldn't cut it as a Summer Olympics city, but who cares about the Winter ones? Go Korea!

i have to agree with this somewhat. i'd've never known about it had my relatives not taken me there when i visited two or three years ago. i still can't ski worth sh|t.

i'd beg to differ. pusan and daejon are fine, bustling cities that could hold their own.
i will agree though, that i do think it'll be a while before korea sees the summer olympics. probably not even until after a reunification, simply because the country is the size of indiana.

i can scan a map for it tomorrow, if you want. pyeongchang's tiny.
romanization is tricky, too. you might find it as p'yongch'ang, pyongchang, or what not.
the website is here:

1972 - Munich, Germany
1976 - Montreal, Canada

You have to be a big-time city to get on this list, although some cities have snuck in. How else would you explain St. Louis and Atlanta getting the games while New York and Chicago are left out in the cold?

Not quite as prestigious a list. I don't know anything about Pyongchaeng, but I'm pretty sure it's a nicer site than Squaw Valley or Calgary. Hard to be worse.

Calgary is known as one of the best olympics, ever, I'll have you known.
And it was beautiful -- I can tell you don't remember what Kananaskis looks like.
Calgary was the first Winter Olympics ever to turn a profit. Not to mention make Calgary the athletics city in Canada.

I'm of the belief that only world-class cities should get the Summer games. I also believe they should spread it out as much as possible, giving many different countries and regions a crack at it. Atlanta isn't a world-class city and America has had a lot of games. Nothing against Atlanta, but I think that those Olympics belonged someplace else.
