Scientology?
After my roomate began to ask me about my opinion on different religions, he asked if I knew what the hell scientology was about...
I had read something on it years ago, but didnt remember much more than thinking it was a pile of horse ****. Anyway, with my curiosity inflamed, i did a google search to figure out wht the hell its about.
I went here:
http://www.scientology.org/
and then I laughed my ass off... it was so incredibly ambiguous. Under the section titled "what is scientology" it basically said "what do you mant it to be?". In short, it was so incredibly ambiguous, it made me sick.
So I searched more, and found this site:
http://www.xenu.net/
Its FAQ was pretty enlightening in itself, but its "what is scientolgy link" was even more so.
This site basically made it out to seem like an evil cult, eerily like the one in that simpsons episode where they joined the cult led by The Leader (forget what the cult's name was)
was this site just horribly biased? Does anyone know what scientology is all about? What does John Travolta and Tom Cruz find in this obscure and strange 'religion'?

Scientology is just a big scam. Maybe some folks genuinely find it good for themselves and for their lives, but my opinion is that it's only about making money and using people. I think it's a dangerous thing.
If most material is 1) top secret and 2) very expensive then I can't help but wonder..

The cult was the "Stonecutters". And that analogy is not bad, except that scientology is not funny. to scientology.

Sir Ralph, sure, but some of the strories are funny. Except if you believe in them. I read somewhere some of the 'secret' things that you can only read when you have reached a certain level. The person who released these secret documents has been threatened a lot for what I remember. But I understand it, because it was such a BS that I now understand why people have to be prepared for this kind of crap. No sane person would take that without seriously thinking what the hell are these folks thinking about? But the idea is clever, I have to read the basic idea again to remember, but it was pretty much sci-fi.. and you had to do lots of things so these I invisible thingies didn't bother you or something like that. I bet someone remembers.
Hey, one of our dear posters in UK was writing about this to some paper, right? There was a thread about this like a year ago.

Here's a good document about what it's about, Kramerman if you have the time, check this out:
http://www.helsinki.fi/~huuskone/Scn/ot-levels.txt
You get some idea what it's about..

I read (in an Article about Scientology) that the Members of Scientology, after gaining a certain grade (and of course investings thousands of dollars) get told the story behind the organization.
AFAIR it seems to be that there was one certain Megavillain who murdered Millions of Aliens on another planet (or in another dimension). That caused the souls of those Aliens (the so called Thetans) to be set free and they wandered to find other hosts, which they found in that, which would later beconme the humans. But as tere were so much Thetans, every human is inhabited by many of them. As every Thetan has its own goals this leads to the human being not concentrate on one goal but to wander halpless between many different goals (and often not achieve one of these goals) and so Scientology tries to get those Thetans out of the human body, until there is only one Thetan remaining.

Those E-meters where funny. I saw a documentary about scientology and remeber those E-meters. Basically you measure your levels (not sure what levels). The thing is the device is just bunch of leds or something, not really measuring anything. And it costs like let's say $10k. And naturally you need two of them, because the first one might broke, and what are you going to do then?! So you need two, right ...

And the funny thing is, that those people believe that crap, because they really really want to believe in it. Otherwise you would just have wasted tens of thousands of dollars.

I mean, this is really the great example of human psychology. Give it away for free, and people will say it's utter crap. But sell it for ridiculous prices, and people will say ít's the work of a genius, amazing and incredible.

Hurricane, yeah, and after you have spent all your money and everyone elses money too, it has to be true, because if it wasn't.. it would really suck!

maybe that thetan stuff isn't BS after all... they want to make you better able to concentrate on matters. that surely improves ability. what they call it, what kind of story they invent around it shouldn't matter.
maybe they invent silly stories as to scare away those that are not noble enough in their mind...

Yeah it was me who wrote an article. Long story, its in legal purgatory. I can respect most religions, but Scientology is a scam. If you find out what the help courses consist of, as well as the founder being a scoundrel (Hubbard) then you'll understand.

Yeah, sure why not.
They've already threatened SMG (my bosses) with legal action. Considering once of the offenses I allege is that they have a stockpile of shotguns, I don't feel particularly safe
Thankfully I've had none of that "fair game" crap.

Come to think of it, haven't heard too much from Rosie O' Donnell lately.
