Why do people scream "CENCORSHIP!!!" at private organizations like its illegal?
[Rant]
Heres an example.......
Susan Serandine: Lunatic celebrity who is... well you all know her political views, I dont need to list them.
After he she made a complete ass of herself, several organizations which were going to give her awards or recognize her for various things decided not to..... what did she and her cronies scream? CENCORSHIP!!
"Just because I have different views then you dosent mean mine arent just as valuable! It is my right to be honored by your private organizations, even though I act like trash! Just because I use my celebrity status to sprout propoganda dosent mean you shouldnt honor me! Why thats cencorship and its (this is my favorite part), its..... ITS UN-AMERICAN!!!!"
So Miss Serandine, you think its American to force private people and organizations to respect your point of view? I'm sure your very knowledgable about the constituion, can you point out the part where it says private citizens dont have the peragotive to cencor people? All these morons do is show they have absolutley NO idea about what is "American" and what isnt..... forcing other people to accept your point of view dosent seem very American to me. In goverment everyone has to have their equal say....... in the private sector you can legally descriminate all you want if someone makes a fool of themself with their political views.
I dont know what pisses me off more, that morons like her scream its cencorship, or that they scream that cencorship from private organizations is un-america....... ALMOST as bad is the fact that said organizations say it ISNT cenorship to try to save face..... why do they do that? It's their RIGHT to not support psychotic lunatics lol!

sue her for slander. its the american way! I mean if they are giving an award for acting(I assume?) and they decided to not cuz they think she's a political nut. that doesn't inspire huge confidence in the validity of their award.

americans are stupid, by and large.
i bet that if you put any run-of-the-mill party-line conservative in a similar situation, they'd say the same thing.
conservatives have been saying things to that effect for years with that "liberal media bias" bullsh.t.

Pointing out media bias is not the same as making accusations of censorship when private citizens and organisations don't want to listen to Sarandon. Censorship, in our system, is government threats of coercion to silence people.

It really depends on what those honours were. If they were for patriotic obedience to governmental policy then such an action was entirely appropriate.
If they were for other purposes, such as acting awards, then the awarding bodies are perfectly entitled to debase the stature of their awards if they choose to do so.

What awards?
All I've seen was the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown disinviting them for fear they would discuss the war instead of Bull Durham.

BTW, here's a little flash from the past:
Quote:
|
Hollywood celebrities are now joining the growing chorus of voices critical of Paramount. Academy-Award-winning-actress Susan Sarandon offered her comments and a photo for the StopDrLaura.com web site. "Dr. Laura has a right to her opinion, but I think it's irresponsible of Paramount to not give equal time, at the very least, to a person with a more enlightened and contemporary perspective," Sarandon's statement said. "I'm totally against wasting the airwaves giving visibility to a person who is clearly in dire need of compassion, education, and a good shrink herself." (The site also contains pictures and quotes from David Lee, writer Bruce Vilanch, and writer/director Christopher Landon).

Why shouldn't such a private organisation be accountable for it's actions, especially when they act within the public sphere. They can be criticised, and should be. What if such a company decided to implement a 'no woman' or 'no blacks' policy? Would you expect them to be able to implement this policy because it is their choice? Of course not. By their very nature of being involved in society, they are open for scrutiny in terms of their position on discrimination and censorship...like it or not...

I just find it hilarious that someone who took part in an effort to drive someone else off the air -- in effect, trying to get them fired --is now crying because someone else has shown displeasure at their statement.

Oh, and PH? It's because it's a private organization.

The problem is that an organization that promotes itsel as being open to all the public is considered to be a public organization, even if it is privately owned. The organization then acquires the obligations of a public concern which includes the requirement that it be fair and not discriminate. If the award that Ms. Sarandon was nominated for had nothing to do with the statements that Ms. Sarandon made then if the organization removes her niomination then it makes the appearence that the award is not necessarily for the purpose for which it is stated.
