Educational discounts
I'm going to be buying an IBM ThinkPad T40 within the next few days. Because it's quite a bit of money, I'd love to get an educational price on it and probably save a few hundred dollars.
But I don't know where. My campus computer store only sells Apples, Compaqs, Sony's and Toshiba's.
Do companies usually give you an educational price if you phone them and order it, saying you're a student?

Thanks Sloww, but I'm trying to find something based in Canada if possible.
Customs is a b*tch, especially on expensive items.

Both the computer stores at UVic charge about 5% more than the local retailers. I guess it helps that we're out in the suburbs.

Inspiron 8500? That thing is huge!
The ThinkPad T40 is 1" thick, 4.5lbs, made with a titanium composite case, shock-absorbed harddrive, and 7h of batterylife (11h if you replace the DVD/CD-RW bay with another battery). Tri-band 802.11a/b/g, 512MB RAM, 1.5GHz Pentium M...

Yeah, it may be but I can't include it with that configuration....and I dont want 12.1 " screen and external dvd+rw + crappy integrated videocard+ non-existing upgradebility.
You know almost every component can be upgraded in my current conf. the memory, the grafx card you name it.

Anyway, there are some choices you have to make before buying new PC. Laptop or desktop? Choose laptop. Slim and laconic or a bit hevier and powered by the fastest mobile technology? It's really whatever you prefere. Ideal would be if you'd be able to get it both. Slim and very powerful. Closest you can get is Inspiron 8500 with ultrasharp widescreen(1920*1200), Sony Vaio(newest models) or perhaps the good ol 17" G4..
