Diplomacy is probably the most important thing when playing against computer AIs, especially on diety and other higher level difficulties.
If you do good diplomatically you don't even need much of an army, just get other nations to fight for you, USA style
If I want to go to war vs. another civ that has a stronger military at the time, or I want to make sure other civs keep their nose out of my war/business, I usually make them all sign military alliances. This works great becaused they mop up all the excess enemy units while I just take the cities.

How about you wait a while until you don't need iron to conduct a successful war... wait for tanks. Fight hard for oil and rubber if you don't get them (cavalry, you have saltpeter...right?) Otherwise I dunno what you're supposed to do right away... I usually play monarch or regent (depending on whether i need a humbling or a boost in self-confidence when I start)

I may have, but I would have to figure out the years and the save is for AU402 and it is well over a meg the last I looked. Not exactly a fun game to load up.

So it could be that I was confused (again). It would require a count of the shields to verify, but I suspect that when India finished the UN in 1996, Hammy switched his UN to Manhatten. If that is enough of a prebuild todo the job, then they did not use a leader and I need to stop trying to rely on my memory, especially after so many long sessions of Civ.
