Good grief again. That was - or became - the telemovie (90 minutes) pilot. Originally, it wasn't going to be an ongoing TV series, but 3 telemovies. I wrote the second of the telemovies. When they decided to turn it into a series, the first telemovie - above - became the pilot and my telemovie was cut in half and shown as two episodes - part 1 and part 2. It was called "One Point Eight Million Reasons To Change Your Name". You'll find it listed, probably on the same site where you found the above. It was a fun show. I remember we got fan emails from your part of the world - I just can't recall whether it was Sweden or Denmark.

The good thing about those shows - Matlock, Homicide, et al - was that the writers had to develop their own stories. So the writers learned how to plot and how to tell a story. They had to. These days, with so many serials around, writers no longer have to plot and tell their own stories. They're generated by committee. Thus, sadly, there are very few television writers in this country who can tell a story.

Homicide and Division 4 were very good too.
I imagine Matlock could be seen as the inspiration of a lot of shows set in country towns, not just cop shows. It showed the potential. Bellbird would be another but I never watched it.

Bellbird came a few years before Matlock. Bellbird was pretty much the inspiration for A Country Practice many, many years later. The chap who created A Country Practice was the EP of Bellbird all those years earlier.

To many people there's no difference!
It was only broadcasted for two seasons (at least according to the site I visited)... Seems Matlock Police was more popular?

There were only two seasons of "Good Guys Bad Guys" - 26 episodes in all, two series of 13. The network here wanted more, but the distributors who sold it overseas had great trouble trying to put a label on it for marketing purposes. It didn't fit one particular genre, it was an off-beat mixture of comedy and drama. So, unfortunately, because our domestic market/audience here is so small, most of our TV series need overseas sales to recoup the costs. Thus, unfortunately, because the distributor said they couldn't recoup enough overseas, that was the end of it.
Matlock Police, OTOH, was made 30 years ago, when costs were a lot less, and the local networks could afford to carry the fiscal burden. It ran for about 7 years, with about 40 episodes made a year, so there were roughly 280 eps made.

My word it does! Even though my idol Phil Spector is in just a tad of bother at the moment - charged with murder - I will not hear a word against him! The nutter.

He's been seriously off the planet for 30 years. Some would question whethere he was ever even on it. I've just about worn out the boxed CD set. Better replace it.

Ok, revealing my ignorance here, but I always thought (really!) the quote refered to "Monotheism rules!"... Can someone please explain how Phil Spector enters the picture???
Mono as opposed to Stereo is the only thing I can come up with?

Yes, most around here thought it referred to Civ. It didn't. It's mono as opposed to stereo. "Mono Rules" is one of Phil Spector's many mottos. He worked in mono when he created the "Wall of Sound" style of music in the early and mid-1960s. At its best, it's still a thrilling sound today.

It is thrilling - probably more appreciated now than at the time. How does it translate to CD?
I was watching a doco recently where various musos were lamenting the loss of "live" recording to disembodied digital mixing. Similar laments about the move from vinyl to CD. Not sure if this is a myth or not.

While I agree with you in principle, it's difficult not to have vicious feelings against someone who has betrayed you in an earlier game.
Wouldn't you love to crush someone who has stabbed you in the back? Maybe even by using the same means? Shoving crusader after crusader down his/her throat while filling the King's Chat with "Remember the Alamo?"

Yes, now it's appreciated for the technical - and artistic - achievement that it was using the primitive equipment Spector had on hand. Back then - well, "River Deep Mountain High", one of the greatest examples of the style, barely dented the charts. On CD, with good speakers, it sounds extraordinary.

The other night I saw Elton John saying that modern recording technology only slows down the recording process. Back in the days of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", they knocked off four songs a day. The whole vinyl -v- CD debate is interesting. When CDs first appeared, they said vinyl was dead because of the sheer clarity of CDs. Now the same people are calling CDs sterile, wanting the "atmosphere" of vinyl. Naturally, I kept my massive 60s vinyl collection.

ya I tend to think there is "something" about vinyl, a depth to the sound, an intangible body to the sound. But it could be all imagination.
I saw the Elton John doco. He's not the only one saying it. A lot of classic tracks were put down in one incredible take.

Bizarre that Bernie can't remember writing "Candle In The Wind", can't remember Elton first playing it. And it wasn't because of the drugs.
