In four man games, after the first few thousand years, I have no problem sneaking in a smoke in between turns. But in duels, I'll ask for the other person to not advance till I get back. (which turns into the perfect time for them to establish an embassy, steal a tech or two, take out a few sentries, etc. ) Most people cooperate, unless it's late in the evening and they're a bit buzzed and forget. It really doesn't slow the game down much, since I smoke real fast, thinking about what my oppenent is doing while I'm puffing.

I would consider a smoke break the same as a toilet stop or a break to make wife a cup of tea to calm her down.

It does get easier the more experience you get.
I must say it was easier for us since no one had any experience yet, there was no one to poke fun at us.
Don't let it deter you.

Good. We're still hoping to catch you guys in a game when you've sped it up a bit.

From reading the above postings of Lafayette and Slowthinker, it seems as you both played as you would have against the AI, just that in this case it was against a human opponent (thinking out each turn individually, planning all your Micromanaging during your own turn, etc). This makes sense to do in SP, as no one is waiting for you to finish, and the AI (no matter how dumb ) is very quick, much quicker then humans.
I find myself unwittingly in MP games speeding up my play, at the detriment of my Civ, as I need all the help I can get, but I rush decisions that I would normally carefully think out.
Perhaps that is the difference here? Slowthinker carefully plans his next move against humans, as he would against the AI, while many MP players speed up (and the ones who have played many games have gotten so proficient at speeding up that it has become natural to them, and likely doesn't effect their game any longer?)
Just a thought.

I think La Fayette can be enough quick right now.
What concerns about me - I think that I would never enjoy a 2 min game.
Sparrowhawk, I speed up too, I would be able to play 1 hour a turn, or more .

SlowThinker won, so no one should be afraid of me, I suppose.
I play much faster than he does
I have stated very clearly that I was ready to play (almost) anytime against anyone willing.
But I haven't received any offer yet.
So I go on playing scenarios ( '2194 days of war' in 20 turns last week ) and I suppose SlowThinker goes on testing something that wasn't tested thoroughly enough yet.

La Fayette, I would be glad to play with you! I only played a few MP games, as I'm more into scenarios (which I'm sure you can understand... ) and PBEMs.
And as we are in the same time window, it should be easy to find a correct time for both of us...
Maybe starting in 1-2 weeks??
And if ST can take part as well, so much better!
Otherwise, if we 2 are the only players, we'll have to chat in french...

I think I've discovered a problem with playing quickly. I set my science at 30% and tax at 70% for some quick cash. Forgot about it and just noticed it about 1000 years later. Slowthinker probably wouldn't have made that mistake.

Not probably: certainly (because 1000 years later would mean at least a fortnight, and he sure would have made a dream about too much money and not enough techs).
