Ask Asher for computer help
two problems:
1. I get a "real player" startcenter icon next to my clock when I start up. And I don't (think) I want it.
2. I get that little icon for the messanger program at stratup and I think I don't want it.

(Probably) Useless advice:
1. Do you really need realplayer for anything? If not uninstall it. Otherwise open it up and look in Options or Properties or something. It appears in the system tray by default, but you might be able to turn it off. Can't say for sure because it's a long time since I had it installed.
2. Are you using XP? I don't think it likes it very much if you try to stop Messenger loading on startup. IIRC earlier versions of windows will just let you uninstall the thing.

(Totally) Useless advice;
1. Put some tape on your monitor to cover the icons.

1) Go to: Start > Run > type in: msconfig > [tab] Startup > untick evntsvc
2) In the program, go to: Tools > Options > [tab] General > untick "Automatically run Messenger when I log on to Windows"

I think Zopperoni's advice looks good... msconfig is a handy little devil, probably why MS concealed it.

And if you don't want the messenger icon to reappear whenever you start Outlook Express you can open the registry editor go to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express' and add a value with the name: 'Hide Messenger', type: REG_DWORD and value 2.

That kind of stuff is way beyond me and would need to be described in detail. Plus I never use Outlook.

Or why not un-check "Enable Instant Messaging" inside the nice, purty Outlook Express Preferences dialog box?

It comes as no surprise that a government worker excels at inefficiency.

I looked for such an option before and did so now but still the only uncheckable option I find is 'Run this program when Windows starts'

Nacht - Express has been altered many times, but even in the anceint version I have, there is an option to disable the Messenging. Look under Option if you don't have a Preferences choice.

Step 4: Click the selection boxes for the services you do not want. In my case they also happen to be msnmessenger and realplayer. Yours might be differently named but they should be similar. If the names are not revealing, look at the path, that should give you a clue.
Press OK when you are done.
Your system will prompt you if you want to restart or exit without restart. I'll restart just so I can finish this tutorial.
(BRB... I need to restart )
