What's the usage of the cosmetic and silly own palace contruction?
I hope the new XP will let it become usefull in some way.
Don't you agree ?

I find the palace to be a nice little addition to the game. Even if it is only eye candy it can be fun to do. Sometimes I will add a piece and other times I will just close down the window. But it also indicates to you that something good happened and since they had the throne room in civ2 I guess they decided they needed something for civ3. I wouldn't like to see it serve a purpose really, just indicate to the player that the people are happy.

I like bells and whistles, such as the Palace, or the City View after building a wonder, as long as I can click closed quickly when I don't feel like dealing with it.

It can be fun, and is easily avoided when you don't care to play with it. I had one game where I used Palace additions to commemorate military victories by building the next piece in the architecture of whatever civ I had just beaten down. It made for an, ummmm, interesting looking palace to say the least.

I played some civ2 one of these days (hey, nostalgia ) and, as improbable as it seems, I realized that I miss the wonder movies
[Yoda style]
Nice eyecandy they were!

I don't understand why the palace upgrades can not be turned of in preferences.
I am not sure of why the wonder movies were not in CivIII, but PTW used about 670MB, so it could be a problem of space. I am sure they do not want ot go into another disk.

vmxa, you probably know this, but if you cancel it the first time it pops up telling you the people want to expand your palace, it won't show up again. At any point, you can still go to palace view and add all those pieces you've stocked up, so it's not really turned off, but for practical purposes, you don't have to worry about the pop-up harassing you.

Making the Palace useful would be indeed an option.
For example: the more upgrades you make to the palace, the more culture it'd generate; or maybe corruption across your empire would decrease a bit; just an idea.

Well, it always worked for me. That is, of course, within that game only.

I love the cutscenes in SMAC, they added so much more to the game. Civ3 should add in cutseans for wonder building or myabe capturing cities. It creates a story to go along with the advancement of your civilization.

I wish Atari/Firaxis would make it so if you had CIV II and the wonder movies they would play in CIV III
. What a thought...

What do you mean by cancel? AFAIK you have two bittons. One is to accept and then you pick an upgrade. The other is the X and it cancels the scren. This will not stop the palace from coming up at some later point.
The only way I know of to stop it is not not make the people admire you.
Did I miss something?
I would like the to make a preference to stop it from ever coming up.

Now you are on to something. Make it do someting in the game or at least to the score. Some reason to care about it.

All of these ideas would be interesting, but as it sits now they will have a problem due to the spaceon the CD. I would imagine that C3C will use even more space.
They will be very loathed to go to a second Cd as that adds to cost and shipping cost.

I mean the X. I don't know what may be set differently from you and Jaybe, but if I cancel the screen the first time it asks me, I don't remember seeing it ask again until I start a new game. Maybe it's just my memory.

This is a marvellous idea,in addition your architetture stile could slightly influence your opponents way to approach you. ( classic could means to be peace inclined, medieval could means militaristic inclined etc.. )
BTW I have been playing CIVs since the original one for Amiga, and despiting the fact I find CIV3 very cool indeed,I am missing a lot wonders movies, that IMO gave an unique atmosphere to the game.
Is there any mod that did this for CIV3 ??
Cheers

Yes, we definitely need a 'no palace at all, please' option. Some folks reckon that it doesn't come back if you say 'no' first time but this is simply not the case for most ppl.

Well, hopefully the Palace (or Throne Room) will be useful in Conquests - other than just being eye-candy. Tie the improvements to your cultural influence or even your diplomatic influence. At least this will lend a purpose/reason for the player wanting to perform improvements.

Mine is the opinion of a real rookie (just finished my 1st game ever in Civ) and therefore I could be overly fascinated by bells and whistles but...
... it seems to me that a few SECONDS in a multi hour (or days?) game shouldn't be such a big problem.
And I don't feel the need for a "utility" scope for the palace. Damn, it's refreshing to have a moment of pause within the continuos stress of government duties.

Use for palace
I've often thought it would be cool to line the avenue leading to the palace with flags. You could place the flag of any civ that has an embassy with you, along that avenue. Then it would be useful. If you conquer that civ, the flag gets replaced with one from your own civ. Guess that would lead to us designing some of our own flags, eh? Might be crowded with 31 civs though...

That is a fun sounding idea. But I think some people want the palace to be much more than eye candy.
I don't think the palace should really be changed. Though having a No Palace option sounds like a good idea.

Nice idea - perhaps you could also have the leaderhead of anyone you've conquered on a pike over the entrance gate

Great, barbarian idea!
Maybe in Ancient times only. Afterwards replaced by flags...
